INTERVIEW: Nashville’s Ben de la Cour

Hi Ben, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been better. I’ve been worse. I’m glad this record is out. I’m glad that people seem to be into it. Glad to be here.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “From Now On”?

It’s just kind of a song about despair, loneliness, hopelessness… the holy trinity, as it were.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not really. I just kind of let the song take me where it wants to go. That’s the best case scenario at least

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

There’s a video out right now for it.

The single comes off your new album Shadow Land – what’s the story behind the title?

I’m not really sure. It just came to me as I was finishing up the record. The working title was “The Dangers of Magical Thinking”.

How was the recording and writing process?

I got a grant from Manitoba Film and Music to make it in Winnipeg with Scott Nolan. I figured everyone is making records in Nashville. For better or worse I don’t get that excited about doing what everyone else seems to be doing. Scott is a great artist in his own right, and we bonded over Nick Cave and the fact that we’re both recovering metal heads. We recorded it in the middle of the polar vortex.”

What role does Nashville play in your music?

I love Nashville, I think I wouldn’t have a career if I hadn’t moved here. I feel very fortunate.

How would you say your troubadour life has influenced your writing?

I think whatever kind of life you live is going to bleed into your art.

What aspect of your own personal life did you get to explore on this record?

Most of my songs are story songs. But I’m always in there somewhere.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Inspiration is everywhere. I always believe that imagination is more important than experience, but I could be wrong. Maybe they’re both equally important. Just because it rhymes doesn’t mean it’s true.

Any plans to hit the road?

I did have a lot of tour dates in support of this record. The first leg of the US/Canada tour has been canceled. With COVID it’s anyones guess when I’ll be touring again.

What else is happening next in Ben de la Cour’s world?

I don’t know what’s happening in the world right now. Nobody does. So I guess it’s business as usual really.
