Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Something Like A Love Song”?
“Something Like A Love Song” is a pop electronic declaration of a love which hardly needs expressing because it’s obvious in so many ways. This feeling of obviously love is what we hoped to trap in this snapshot recording. Headphone is always steering our sound in different directions, going heavy at times, but then dialing back towards groovier more danceable tracks like this one. We wrote this song a while ago, but shaped it into its recorded form by touring and testing it out in front of live audiences.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
We looked at our repertoire, and wanted to have a song that spoke about love and was relatable in that way, without trying to define the feeling or make it about a specific person or situation. It needed to be a danceable track that would punch and feel warm and inviting. We think we got pretty close to our goal on this one, and are happy with how it turned out.
How was the recording and writing process?
Over the past six years, we have been honing a system of writing, checking, arranging, scratch recording, tracking, mixing and mastering at Foxhole Studios in San Diego, CA. “Something Like A Love Song” is the tip of the spear of a new batch of singles that will be coming out this year. So follow us if you like brand new music all the time!
What role does San Diego play in your music?
Live venues around San Diego have allowed us to play out and gain a following locally. Legendary venues, like Winston’s, The Casbah, The Holding Company, 710 Beach Club have all given us stage time regularly. San Diego has an eclectic music scene, with something for everyone. It’s a challenge to try and tailor our sets to different lineups and venues, to capture a crowd’s enthusiasm. San Diego has been absolutely instrumental in the development of our sound.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
We are constantly creating, and have a lot of new music in various stages of development. You can expect more Headphone singles to drop regularly. Follow us on IG: @headphonegram or our YouTube channel: HeadphoneTube to keep up with us and hear our new music.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Two tracks entitled “Upside Down” and “White Lies” will drop in the coming months. We strive to push ourselves, expand into new territories, and not over polish or overwork the music. If there’s an idea that doesn’t fit, we squirrel it away for a future release. No harm there! Since we have a pool of songs at various stages, subsequent singles will depend on which direction we’re pulled creatively.
Any plans to hit the road?
As soon as possible, we will return to the road. We tour two or three times a year throughout the U.S.
What else is happening next in Headphone’s world?
More releases and more touring. Eventually, we will hit the East Coast, and play our way back and forth across the USA, then the world, and then the universe.
