Hi Tom, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you! Considering the global pandemic, I am doing well thank you. I hope this is true for you too!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Connection”?
Four years ago I had conceived the fact I had fallen out of love with producing and releasing music after many bad experiences in the music industry. Since then, I continued writing but I barely turned my studio computer on until I felt inspired to create ‘Connection’. Now I am excited about the new material I have been creating!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Absolutely. In my time away from music, I became fully committed to my yoga and meditation practices. One of the practices being an art form called AcroYoga. ‘Connection’ is the song used in an AcroYoga video I created with my partner. The song and video together hopefully depict the beauty and importance of connection, with oneself and others, through love, movement and music. More poignant now, during isolating times, where so many of us feel so much disconnection.
How was the recording and writing process?
Grabbed some weird instruments lying around my house (handpan, beer bottles, ukulele, vinyl scratches) and heavily processed them into samples. Wrote some wistful words about connection. Developed the dynamics and sonic structure with some gritty synths. Annoyed the neighbours by mixing and mastering late at night.
What role does South East London play in your music?
10-15 years ago gigging in SE as a teenager was amazing. Being from SE was an identity I was proud of in music. The live scene isn’t what it was. Now that I very rarely gig in London, its only role nowadays for me is my London accent that shines through my music.
How does yoga influence your whole music and writing process?
*insert pretentious yogi answer here*
In all seriousness, I am a lot less whiney compared to my old songs now that I am all self-aware and enlightened. Haha… #NamasteAtHome
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
It does indeed. I plan on releasing another 2 songs / videos to continue the concept behind ‘Connection’.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
‘Flow’ will be bigger and better, musically and visually in the next 2 months.
What else is happening next in Tom Bem’s world?
I like the idea of writing a short lo-fi jazz, hip-hop album and getting artists to feature. But that’s a job for after lunch. Thank you for the interview and for reading.
