8 Ways to Use Music for Relieving Stress

Music is something that most of the world surrounds itself with, whether you’re at a restaurant, at a store, or even in your own car. But besides entrancing us with its melodies and at times lyrics, music can also encourage a range of physical and mental health benefits like promoting motivation and focus, enhancing memory, and even allowing us to manage stress.

Now we’re not talking about music that’s loud and obnoxious such as rock and roll or death metal, but rather music that is slow, soothing, and easy to listen to. With that being said, here are several ways in which you can use music to relieve stress:

1.  Getting Up In The Morning

When you get up in the morning, put on some soothing and relaxing music to slowly encourage your mind to wake up and set the mood right. We recommend some instrumental or classical music as it helps keep you focused and calm. But if your day is expected to be pretty busy and long, then might we suggest something more upbeat, especially something that encourages dancing and smiling.

2.  Improving Mood

Music is strongly associated with the mind and emotions since people listen to it to reminisce on past memories. Pleasant music tends to bring back some of the happiest moments that we cherish in our lives. Therefore, whenever you feel depressed or stressed, try to unwind by putting on some good music to recall those fond and loving times.

The best part is that music can be played at any time we like to fix or brighten our mood. Just plug in a pair of headphones, and start playing some of your favorite songs from your custom made playlists on your smartphone or iPod.

3.  Meditation

Meditation is by far one of the best stress-relieving practices the people can engage in. It’s even more enjoyable when accompanied by relaxing music. Meditation music is available in several stores and we’re sure you can find an album that can help you find your center and inner peace and release those nasty inner toxins that are plaguing your soul. Even if meditation is not your cup of tea, you can still listen to meditation music to help you relax and shave off the daunting regular stress levels anyway.

4.  Reduce Anxiety Levels

Several studies have proven how music can decrease levels of anxiety. And as we all know, anxiety is one of the most undesirable negative mental conditions known to man, which has become pretty much of an epidemic these days. What’s worse is that anxiety is usually caused by excess levels of stress. And when stress continues to accumulate and build up over time, it makes us anxious around people, situations, and other aspects of life.

However, listening to music minimizes our stress levels, thereby reducing our anxiety levels as well. We can do this just about anywhere in the world, whether at home or even at work (provided your superiors would be okay with it).

5.  While Working Or Studying

Sometimes people get distracted by a number of things whether they’re in a public area, or in their bedrooms. More specifically, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with negative thoughts or creative roadblocks whenever you’re working or even studying. You could be overthinking doing a project in a certain manner or stuck on a really difficult topic for your school assignment, which is what allows you to build up so much stress in the head. That’s why one of the best escapes is listening to calming instrumental music to help reduce those negative thoughts and emotions and improve our concentration.

6.  Improve Sleep Patterns

The average adult needs between 7 to 9 hours of sufficient sleep in order to feel refreshed and recharged for the day. Besides improving our concentration and getting us prepared for the day, sleep is also great for pain relief. But this can’t be possible if our sleeping pattern gets messed up or if we’re not getting enough sleep. But that’s we’re listening to music plays a crucial factor in all of this.

Whenever you’re experiencing trouble sleeping, plug-in your headphones and put on some calming soothing music before or while going to bed. As a matter of fact, there’s a barrage of calming online songs and playlists that are specifically put together to promote better sleep for the night. In just a couple of seconds, you’ll be drifting away peacefully and softly without even noticing it and wake up as fresh as spring chicken in the morning.

7.  Cooking

Good nutrition is also essential in keeping stress levels down. Instead of eating outside – where you don’t know whether the person preparing your food has washed their hands –  it’s best to eat at home to not only save on your hard-earned money, but also ensure the meals you prepare are clean and healthy. However, some people may find that they’re too tired to prepare food for themselves after a long day at work.

Fortunately, by putting on smooth jazz or any similar kind of music, you’ll be more motivated and excited to cook instead of considering it to be a chore. During this time, you’ll find yourself to be more relaxed and in a much calmer state of mind before setting up the dinner table. Besides, putting on the right kind of music in the right atmosphere will help you savor the dish with every bite you take.

8.  Decluttering The House

It might not have hit you before, but cleaning any part of your house, be it the desk in the corner of your room, the room itself, or even the entire house, can be quite relaxing and de-stressing even. However, it doesn’t change the fact that cleaning is a chore that may not be as fun or exhilarating as it is to other people. This is especially the case after coming back from a long day of work and you’re just too tired to pick up the broomstick and mop.

But, turning on energetic, upbeat music in the back can certainly get things rolling. Here’s a little hint: if you tell yourself that you’ll only clean for certain types of songs and then you’ll be done, you’ll be able to work more efficiently. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even learn to enjoy it all together.
