Singer-songwriter Sebastian Coe is no stranger to the spotlight. With an impressive array of achievements already under his belt, the young Perth-based artist has just released Me, a big, rousing contemporary song with a universal lyric and heart-stopping vocal performance. If his name sounds familiar it’s because Sebastian Coe has been a singer, dancer and actor for some time now, first appearing on The Voice Kids Australia when he was only 8 years old. Since then he has continued to perform around Australia and overseas. Me will resonate with those who have struggled to find their place in the world; it’s an impassioned exploration of self-belief and hope. Lines such as, ‘I’m gonna never let you see, never let you see a weaker side of me’ are radiantly brought to life by Sebastian’s soulful and magnetic vocal prowess. Utilising the evocative combination of piano and strings, Me allows for the full spectrum of Sebastian’s voice to shine through. Beginning with the verses and their ascending melodic structure, Sebastian’s exquisitely fine cadences reflect the pertinent nature of the lyric with impressive dexterity. Following on the verses, the pre-chorus veers away slightly with a part that utilises more space, which then allows for the chorus to take off, which it does. The song’s melodic components are consistent throughout, with every section strong and powerful, containing aspects of drama, vulnerability and emotion. As well being well-produced, it also nicely arranged, with the string section in particular quite evocative and moving. This track is a perfect introduction to Sebastian’s work; it highlights all his burgeoning strength as a performer and vocalist as well as his growing stature as a young all-rounder who is part of the new breed of Australian talent. Me is a poignant reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the electrifying effect of a brilliantly crafted song.
