Hi juni, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m good! Well, at least, as good as you can be during a global pandemic lol.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “how it is”?
“How It Is” is hands down the most personal song I’ve released to date, and probably the most unique too. It tells the story of my life as a young teenager growing up in a Muslim household with strict parents, and the kind of isolation I felt at the time. Sonically it’s this weird blend of indie-pop/alternative music and hip-hop, which I love.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
There’s no one event that I can point to, other than I know that my adolescent experience played a pivotal role in my development, and I knew I wanted to express that through a song. I’d tried telling the same story in a couple different verses before, but this is the first time it all really clicked.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the single?
Yes! The official music video is out now. You can find the link here:
How was the recording and writing process?
Incredibly fluid. I was in the studio with producer duo Pops & Poolboy, when Pops started experimenting with this insane, Vampire Weekend-esque guitar riff. It really inspired me to get writing, and within a couple hours the song was written and recorded. Of course, then it takes a lot of tweaking and refinement to perfect, but the core of the song was done within the day.
What role does the Toronto play in your music?
In this particular song it was pivotal, since I was living in the GTA when all of this stuff was going down. I’m not necessarily shouting out the CN Tower in every verse lol, but when I imagine the song, it’s always based in Toronto.
As someone who tends to collaborate a lot – do you tend to take a different approach when working with someone else rather than your own?
Good question. When collaborating I find you need one person to spearhead an idea and the other to understand what you’re going for, take inspiration from the idea, and run with it. I’m really good at taking ideas and running with it. Obviously working on my own, I have to create the idea AND run with it, which is more difficult, but also more satisfying in the end.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Definitely! My next single “Favourite Machine” is coming soon. You can follow me (@wordsbyjuni) for more updates on that.
What else is happening next in wordsbyjuni’s world?
I’m still exploring! Currently a lot of the stuff im working on has been more indie-pop, but these days my heart is leaning more towards psychedelic hip-hop, and I’ve even been toying with the idea of an acoustic EP. So lets see where it all goes 🙂
