Looking Back At The Movies Of April 1990

So far, my looks back into the history of film releases has not yielded much in the way of positive results. I keep looking deeper and deeper into the past, five years at a time, to see what kind of films have been coming out this time of year. We aren’t getting to see new movies right now in theaters. It sucks. However, based on my dives into the past, we may not have been missing out on much. Will 1990 be any different? Yes, we are now 30 years into the past, hoping for something good.

These days, the “summer” movie season has started by April. That wasn’t the case in 1990. Although, a very important movie did indeed come out in April of 1990. I speak, of course, of Ernest Goes to Jail. That’s a joke, obviously, though some will probably consider that the best of the Ernest movies. Take that, Slam Dunk Ernest.

20° BAFICI: «Cry Baby» de John Waters (1990) – CINÉFILO SERIAL

A sequel to The Gods Must Be Crazy was released. They barely had enough story for a first movie. How did they manage a second? A couple of movies that do have their audiences came out in April of 1990. One I have never seen. That would be The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. I’ve heard it’s good, but it doesn’t really appeal to me. What I have seen, though, is Cry-Baby. I wouldn’t call myself a John Waters fan. He does too much shock value stuff and lowest common denominator grossness, but his less grotesque movies have their charms. Cry-Baby is pretty good. I like it conceptually, and Johnny Depp is a lot of fun, but there’s a little too much Waters touches here and there for me to totally get on board.

All in all, it’s another lackluster month. Not much in the way of truly terrible stuff, even Ernest Goes to Jail is just run-of-the-mill lousy, and a couple of notable ones. Still, where are the hits? Where are the critical gems? Since we’re getting close to the beginning of May, though, I’m going to note one May release from 1990. That would be Back to the Future III, which, at times, I have felt is the best movie in that trilogy. I know that’s an unusual take but it is fun to see Doc and Marty in the Old West. Maybe the ‘80s will bring us more luck.
