Today, New York City’s Onyx Collective is sharing a new video from their album Manhattan Special: Onyx Collective Plays Rodgers & Hart / Rodgers & Hammerstein out now via TMWRK Records.
Directed by Something Special Studios and edited by Diago Donival, “Manhattan” collects New York City footage from the archives to celebrate the city throughout the decades, reminiscing on recognizable Manhattan moments at a time when the city is all but recognizable. It’s a tribute to the New York we all love and hope to see again soon.
Manhattan Special: Onyx Collective Plays Rodgers & Hart / Rodgers & Hammerstein was produced by Isaiah Barr of Onyx Collective and Jeremy Yohai of Concord Music Publishing. The album is comprised entirely of Onyx Collective’s reimaginations of songs from the legendary songwriting duos of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II and Rodgers & Lorenz Hart. Three of the biggest names of the American Songbook, these songwriting pairs are responsible for numbers such as “My Funny Valentine,” “Spring Is Here,” “Miss Jones,” “Getting To Know You,” and many more. The release coincides with the 100th anniversary of Rodgers & Hart as a songwriting duo.
The album features previous singles “Blue Moon,” featuring Ian Isiah for a rework of the 1934 classic written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, as well as “Where or When” featuring Kelsey Lu and “My Funny Valentine” featuring Nick Hakim, both renditions from the 1937 musical Babes In Arms, and performed by many, including Dean Martin and Benny Goodman.
