Potential benefits of Probiotics in Women

Probiotics have done so much in maintaining good health for so long and are probably having the attention of comparatively more people than before. Probiotics offer significant health benefits in every form they are used either in yogurt or probiotic supplements. Probiotics aid in digestion, immune health, skin, allergies, mental health etc. and most importantly they provide potential health benefits in female intimate health. Probiotics for Women’s Health have shown significant health benefits and studies are providing more evidence with time.

Probiotics and their Use

Probiotics are microorganisms, particularly bacteria, and some beneficial fungi that have a beneficial and positive effect on human health. The father of germ theory, Louis Pasteur, came to know that there is a competition among bacterial species to create ecosystems in the human body, keeping a proportion between the good and bad bacteria that affects your health in several ways. Probiotics increase the number of healthy microorganisms in the gut and controlling the number of bad or harmful bacteria. Through research, scientists began to work on the productions of antibiotics to kill harmful bacteria rather than improve the growth of good bacteria.

Recent studies have shown that probiotic bacteria have countless benefits. They improve digestion, improve the immune system, uplift mood, enhance the absorption of some nutrients, help to reduce constipation, and the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. In medical terms, probiotics can also be used as antibiotics, what is also known as microbial interference treatment (MIT).

Benefits of probiotics in women

Probiotics have been shown to be very useful in Women’s Health.

  • Reduce the effect of harmful microorganisms
  • Comforting the symptoms of IBS
  • Improve bowel movements
  • Improve vaginal balance and thus the pH levels
  • Defend against UTIs

Health issues and hormones vary from woman to woman. Women’s bodies are different from those of men, so are the requirements. Probiotics benefit both men and women, but probiotics offer some potential additional benefits to women. These benefits include improving vaginal pH and urinary tract health.  Probiotics also improve other conditions in women, such as reduced recurrence of yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Good for promoting vaginal pH balance

Probiotics can help improve vaginal health and help to reduce unpleasant discharge, burning and itching sensation. The vaginal canal normally has an acidic pH of between 3.7 and 4.5. Studies have shown that vaginal canal bacteria (probiotics) produce lactic acid that maintains acidity of the vagina. The low pH fights against deadly microorganisms and therefore keep infections at bay.

Different factors, such as age, diet, hormone levels, medications, and sexual practices, affect vaginal microorganisms.  These factors affect vaginal health differently. Taking a high sugar diet and the use of some drugs, especially the use of antibiotics can cause overproduction of fungal yeast known as Candida albicans, which can cause thrush and yeast infections if not controlled in time.

Gardnerella vaginalis is the primary bacteria involve in bacterial vaginosis. Some quantities of Lactobacillus are seen to stop Gardnerella vaginalis from sticking to the vaginal epithelium – that is the thin tissue layer around the vaginal walls. The lack of vaginal lactobacilli causes disturbance in the balance of vaginal microorganisms. To overcome this imbalance, the use of probiotic supplements becomes necessary.
