Hi Asanda, welcome to VENTS! How are you finding the lockdown right now?
Hello, thank you for having me VENTS! I’m finding the lockdown quite boring, however I’ve been productive but for the past weeks! The weather has been amazing so it’s hard, you really wanna go out, meet your friends and have fun. But I’m finding it quite relaxing just being at home, spending quality with my family – it’s what I need right now.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Photogenic”?
Photogenic is a catchy, vibey, carefree, happy song! I know it’s a lot of words to describe it but it’s true! There’s no one word that describes this record. It’s a song about being true to yourself because we can only be ourselves, it’s about inner beauty, being kind to yourself (and others) and just having self confidence.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
As soon as I started using social media when I was 14, I started taking selfies, looking back I do cringe but at that time. I do believe that this song has been within me before I even made it a song – I love mirrors, pulling silly faces, performing and just being me.
How has Stormy and Stefflon Don influenced your writing?
Stefflon Don and Stormy inspired me mainly because of what they’re doing for the British rap and grime scene. They are both different but they have a similar flavour. It’s so inspiring to see two people, being able to capture people. I’m not even a rapper yet they inspire me to rap. They have a flow that only they know, it would be hard to even try and imitate them, but rising artists should definitely be inspired by them.
What did you learn from your time back on BGT that you are putting in action on your career now?
The biggest thing I learnt from BGT is to have a thick skin, which is really the message of “Photogenic” – people will always judge you. I learnt that you have to be brave, and that I have to stand on my own two feet regardless because I only have myself, it’s my responsibility to be the best I can be. I have taken that amazing experience forward not onto into my career but also my everyday life. Since doing the show, I’ve learned to be myself, enjoy joy life, be happy and try not overthink things. With everything going on in the world right now we just have to enjoy what we have and not take anything for granted.
Does the new single mean we can expect more new material from you in 2020 – if so, how’s it coming along?
There will definitely be new material out later this year, as it’s no time to stop now I’ve started! Even though there’s a lockdown, I’m writing songs, recording them on my phone so that I’ll have some ideas ready for when it’s time to get back into the studio.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
