Today on Earth Day, we are excited to announce that the Philadelphia based indie rock and folk harmonic trio, TEOA (The End of America) has premiered their newest single and music video for “Not The End” with GRATEFUL WEB. The band, consisting of Trevor Leonard, James Downes, and Brendon Thomas are thrilled to share intimate footage in “Not The End’ video from their latest performance at NPR Mountain Stage at the Culture Center Theatre in Charleston, WV on 2/9/2020. TEOA’s behind the scene music video was captured by editor and director, Kirby Sybert, who also filmed their previous videos for 2019 releases “Break Away” and “Howl.”
The track written by guitarist/singer/songwriter of TEOA, Trevor Leonard, who states that “Not the End” was born out of the desire for hope in despairing times, exploring if fate can be altered. “I was feeling overwhelmed by the declining state of the world and inspired to figure a way out. I asked myself, what is the message that we need right now?” From this search came the refrain, “Though we’re standing at the edge, this is not the end.” Leonard states, “even though I wrote the lyrics (for “Not the End”) long before the coronavirus pandemic, its meaning now seems even more amplified. We need to remember not to give up on hope.” “Not the End” opens with three-part harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles’ “Seven Bridges Road” and swells from piano chords to organ and reverb infused electric guitars with a driving beat ala The War On Drugs. The lyrics set up a dystopian scene and the narrator comes across as despairing – a relatable feeling in a time of climate change deniers and unstoppable corporate greed. The images of plastic bottles, pill vials and shattered TVs further push the problems of waste, addiction and the media into purview. The juxtaposition is the reaffirming chorus – “Though we’re standing at the edge, this is not the end.” No one can be sure what the future holds, but it is clear that we need hope to strive for something better.
Not to mention, while the touring season is postponed, their supporters have been asking about ways to keep connected and TEOA has responded with a weekly Facebook livestream every Thursday at 8:30pm EST to interact with their listeners from home. In addition, the band has created a Paypal “virtual tip jar” where donations can be made. All funds will go towards rolling out this year’s exciting plan of releasing a new song every month!
