Joan As Police Woman Releases “Under Control” (The Strokes) Single | ‘Cover Two’ LP Out Friday

Joan As Police Woman will release her acclaimed new Cover Two album this Friday, May 1 on Sweet Police / [PIAS]. She is joined by a variety of friends and influences on the stunning second covers collection, including Meshell Ndegeocello, Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) and Shahzad Ismaily (Lee Fields). Her new “Under Control” (The Strokes) single is a soulful, classic R&B reimagination of the punky era-spanning original, featuring Jacob Silver (bass) and Parker Kindred (drums, vocals). “Under Control” by The Strokes is my favorite song of theirs,” says Joan. “I always heard it as a classic R&B song dressed up as a Strokes song, so I just reframed it the way I heard it naturally and did my best Brian May guitar playing.“

Throughout her lustrous career, Joan has collaborated with a diverse group of legendary artists, including: Sparklehorse, Laurie Anderson, Sufjan Stevens, Aldous Harding, RZA, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Daniel Johnston + more. Recently, Joan subbed for Guy Garvey of the band Elbow on his BBC 6Music show, Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour. She also became a member of Anohni’s ensemble (formerly Antony and the Johnsons) and recorded I Am A Bird Now. In early 2019, Joan took a look back at her first fifteen years of music, and gathered together songs for a triple-disc compilation album, Joanthology, which also became an extensive and hugely acclaimed solo world tour. Cover Two is a stunning covers album including tracks by The Strokes, Gil Scott-Heron, Prince, Talk Talk and more.
