They are rebooting Saved by the Bell. In these troubled times, that may have been forgotten. I had forgotten it, until I saw a trailer pop up on Twitter. If you are a child of the ‘90s, Saved by the Bell was a part of your life. It was a prerequisite. The show was bad, but I watched it all the time growing up. In college, I watched it to laugh at it. I listened to the entire run of April Richardson’s podcast “Go Bayside!” that tackled the show episode by episode. It’s one of my favorite amusing bits of ‘90s pop culture, and now it’s sort of back.
This isn’t a remake. It’s a straight-up continuation of the original show. Jessie, Slater, Kelly, and the king himself Zack Morris are all character. Also apparently Max is back, which is notable because he sort of disappeared during the show’s original run. Get ready for some close-up magic! Zack and Kelly are married, and their kid, Mac, is now a student at Bayside High. Slater teaches gym and I assume coaches football or wrestling. Also, it just dawned on me The Max, a ‘50s-style diner, is still around in 2020. What a weird world.

The question I am debating is if I bother to check out the new show out of morbid curiosity. I kind of feel like I have to. After all, I watched multiple episodes of Fuller House for the same reason, and Saved by the Bell has been a much bigger part of my life than Full House ever was. Plus, John Michael Higgins is the Principal! He’s actually a talent comedic actor! That’s something no cast member of the original show could say (though a couple of the cast has grown into being solid actors in their adulthood).
So yeah, I suppose I will have to see what’s going on at Bayside. Is there a Screech? If so, will they make their own spaghetti sauce? Will Stacy Carosi show up? What are the “nerds” like on the show now? I have questions. I guess there is only way for me to get the answers. I just hope I can still laugh at the new version of the show like the old one. If it’s just generically mediocre that would be a disgrace to the legacy of badness that the original Saved by the Bell blessed us with.
