Interested in PRP Therapy? Here’s How Long PRP Injections Last!

The human body is made up of trillions of cells. There are also multiple types such as bone cells, fat cells, and nerve cells, all of which have their own functions.

Blood cells are another example—their job is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Among those, are platelets.

Put it simply, they help the body form clots to stop bleeding. On top of that, they can also help wounds heal.

In fact, that’s the basis for PRP therapy. What is it? How does it work?

Keep reading to learn more about these PRP injections!

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy makes use of platelet-rich plasma protein, which is believed to promote healing. The idea is that it’ll stimulate the body to grow new, healthy cells.

The process is relatively straightforward in that it involves taking a small blood sample, which is then put into a centrifuge. This separates the platelets from the rest of the blood cells, which are then injected into the treatment area.

Well tolerated, PRP injections generally don’t cause any side effects. However, the injection site may be slightly irritated after the injection.

How Long Do PRP Injections Last?

PRP injections don’t last a set number of days. After all, the goal is to stimulate the body to heal itself.

With that said, you can expect the benefits to last anywhere from 12 to 24 months. At the end of the day, it depends on what it is that you’re treating.

If symptoms persist, you may be able to get a second injection after six months.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

PRP therapy is often used after plastic surgery to promote healing. For example, it’s not uncommon for doctors to inject it into ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Ligaments, in particular, take time to heal, which makes PRP injections an attractive option.

Aside from tissue healing, PRP therapy can also be used to reduce inflammation. For this reason, it’s sometimes used to treat osteoarthritis.

Recent studies have also shown that it may help with hair loss. That is, men who’ve received PRP injections are more likely to regrow their hair compared to those who haven’t received any treatments.

However, more research is necessary to confirm the effects.

How Much Does PRP Therapy Cost?

PRP treatments can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000 per injection, depending on your location.

Keep in mind, however, that it’s usually not covered by insurance. In other words, you’ll have to pay out of pocket.

Also, it’s highly likely that you’ll need to receive multiple injections so it won’t just be a one-time cost.
