Joan As Police Woman has announced Cover Two, a stunning second covers collection out May 1 on PIAS. Joined by Parker Kindred (drums, vocals) and Cole Kamen-Green (trumpet, EVI), Joan has released her propulsive rendition of Cass McCombs’ “Not The Way” today, transfixing listeners with a heart shattering, electrified opus. She shares, “Not The Way” is from Cass McCombs’ first EP. I’d listened to the song for years before I realized what the lyrics were and then just wanted to create a version of my own. The verse describes being judgmental and difficult which leads to the blithe chorus “That’s not the way to make friends”. Effortlessly humorous without being funny.”
This full length collection follows a 3 song project preview EP which includes: “Out of Time” (Blur), “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” (Grease), and “Spread” (Outkast). She worked with a variety of friends and influences on the album including Meshell Ndegeocello, Justin Hicks, Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The Gloaming), Shahzad Ismaily (Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Tom Waits) and Jim White.
Throughout her lustrous career, Joan has collaborated with a diverse group of legendary artists, including: Sparklehorse, Laurie Anderson, Sufjan Stevens, Aldous Harding, RZA, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Daniel Johnston + more. Recently, Joan subbed for Guy Garvey of the band Elbow on his BBC 6Music show, Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour. She also became a member of Anohni’s ensemble (formerly Antony and the Johnsons) and recorded I Am A Bird Now. In early 2019, Joan took a look back at her first fifteen years of music, and gathered together songs for a triple-disc compilation album, Joanthology, which also became an extensive and hugely acclaimed solo world tour. Cover Two is a stunning covers album including tracks by The Strokes, Gil Scott-Heron, Prince, Talk Talk and more.
