INTERVIEW: Montana Jacobowitz

Hi Montana, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you so much for chatting with me today! I’ve been good, I’ve been keeping myself busy in quarantine with songwriting, singing, focusing on perfecting my instruments, Instagram livestreams, making YouTube videos, and working on editing my music video very soon.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Reckless”?

Yes, The song’s focus is women empowerment and to show that women are able to do the things that men can do. The setting is going to be centered around three stories between three girls and their boyfriends. The girls all have a passion to do something that only most men were allowed to do in the past. But now these three girls want to step up to their boyfriends and show them that they are capable of doing anything that men can do.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, when I was younger I was bullied almost every day because I truly had a passion to be friends with the students that had special needs and that didn’t have any friends. I was also told I wasn’t good enough or would never become an actress, singer-songer, musician, or advocate. But my song “Reckless” is a comeback song in a way, where I’m singing and rapping lol 🙂 that I love myself and that I’m never changing and that everyone else should do the same and love themselves. There is apart in the song where I say “Dear friends and Leonardo,” that part was inspired by me growing up loving Leonardo Dicapro and loving his acting. I know crazy, right? lol 🙂

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, I currently do have a lyric video on VEVO. Back in February I filmed the music video for the song, which I can’t wait to release. I’m planning on releasing the “Reckless” music video during the first week of May.

The music video will feature TikToker, Anthony Perlongo, who will be playing opposite my character in the music video.

How was the recording and writing process?

I always find the writing process easier than the recording process. Last summer my mom started putting some lyrics together for the songs and it was named something else. But when I usually write a song, it begins with small tunes and verses recorded on my phone. When I met with my co-writer, Dylan Emmet, online, we combined my moms lyrics and my lyrics together and came up with the song “Reckless.” Then, a week later my family and I went Upstate NY for a weekend to record the song. It felt like it took forever because of the work that goes into making the song. I released the song on Valentines Day and the rest is history.

What role does Scranton play in your music?

I didn’t live in Scranton, PA., very long, only until I was around 2-3 years old and then I moved. But growing up I had a huge obsession watching Disney Channel movies and shows, such as, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Sonny with a chance, and many more. I feel that shows and movies like that really influenced and inspired me to pursue acting and music and remain the person I am today. My parents also played a major role in my music because they always inspired me to keep going and to try new things and by them doing that, I am currently playing and learn 10+ instruments including, Cello, Violin, Recorder, Alto Saxophone, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Voice, Ukulele, and Chimes.

How does your acting background actually influence your music and the other way around?

I think it’s personally the same either way, but I would say that most of my music videos incorporate my talents as an actress into them.

How would you say your upbringing informs your writing?

My upbringings inform my writing because I write about past experiences, such as, what occurred in school, life, socially, and with family. I am able to incorporate these events and feelings into my music.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Compared to the first two songs I wrote, Let Me In and Ask Me Why I Cry,those songs were more so sad and indie sounding. This song, Reckless, is a much more upbeat and pop song compared to my two other songs. I have a fourth song that I am preparing for the release at the end of May or beginning June. It is completely different compared to the three other songs and is culture based. So definitely stay tuned for that.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The title is not ready to be released yet, but the release date we are planning on is either late May or beginning June. So stayed tuned for the release information on my social media.

Any plans to hit the road?

After this crisis is over, I am planning on heading to California again. But my goals for travel for this year on my to-do list definitely includes Canada, London, and Australia. I’m planning on also doing more shows in other cities and hopefully a tour.

What else is happening next in Montana Jacobowitz’s world?

Right now everything is on hold, so it’s a bit hard to predict, but definitely hoping to work on an EP soon, a tour, much more travel, music collaborations, and acting projects. Stay tuned on Montana’s social media for more things coming up.
