These days, we’re all probably feeling a little isolated. We’re largely stuck in our homes. Maybe some of us have family around. Many of us don’t. Even if you do, you probably want more people to talk to. You need conversations to have. As such, I thought I would start writing some articles where I actively post questions toward the Vents readers. I’m starting with a movie query: What is the worst Best Picture winner that you’ve seen?
Now, I know the Best Picture winners that have the worst reputations. You probably do as well. Or maybe not. This isn’t about that, though. It’s about your own personal opinions. Maybe you don’t like a Best Picture winner a lot of people think is a classic. I get that. It Happened One Night was the first “Big Five” winner, which is to say the first film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. I thought it was boring and I turned it off before it was finished. I’m also not crazy about Silence of the Lambs, but I don’t like horror movies by and large, so that’s mostly personal taste.
Everybody says Crash is garbage, and it certainly looks and sounds like garbage. However, I’m not a completist, so I have never dared to see it. The same goes for Green Book. So for me, this was a tossup. On the one hand there’s the winner from 1958 Gigi. It’s an old-school Hollywood musical, not my favorite genre. However, of all the musicals that have won Best Picture it’s my least favorite. I can’t stand it. I don’t like the look. I find the story weird. It’s about a girl becoming a woman or something? But like she seems to go from 12 to 20 in the way she acts and looks. Maurice Chevalier sings the song “Thank Heaven for Little Girls.” It’s a bad movie. It’s lame and unpleasant. I despise Gigi.
And yet, Forrest Gump may be worse. I know this is a popular take on Forrest Gump these days, but I do not run from being in the zeitgeist when I believe it to be true. I’ve never liked Forrest Gump. It’s just so bad. It’s maudlin and saccharine in equal measures. Forrest Gump is just so inane. Sometimes it’s a huge bummer intentional, and sometimes it’s a huge bummer because I’m rolling my eyes at it. Ever note is false. Even Tom Hanks can’t save it, and he’s a great actor. Forrest Gump is his worst film, and probably his worst performance.
In the end, I think I have to go with Forrest Gump as my personal worst Best Picture movie I’ve seen. Now I turn the question over to you. What is your least-favorite Best Picture Oscar winner that you have ever seen?
