Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We’ve been well! We’ve spent the last couple years just taking our time and slowly building and planning our next steps as a band. Also playing a gratuitous amount of video games, but that’s neither here nor there, haha.
Can you talk to us more about your new single “A Love Song“?
This song is essentially a self-aware love song that stresses the importance of showing someone you love them, not just telling them. It all started when our guitarist, Andre, came up with a romantic synth riff, and we just jammed with it until we found our footing. It’s very chill, and it’s something that we think everyone can find something to like in.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Aside from Andre’s synth riff, our singer, Cordell, has always been partial to the ballads and love songs on albums, so the music really set off that type of spark in him. As he was writing, however, he was just coming up with generic love song lyrics, until our bassist, Namon, actually came up with the opening lines, “I could say that I love you, but you’ve heard that before,” and that inspired Cordell to rewrite the song completely into something more self-aware and less just basic love song.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
This part was actually pretty awesome! We had never done anything like this before, so we felt like we were doing some Hollywood stuff. One of the highlights was getting to drive the classic car. We rented a 1960 Chevrolet Impala, and driving it was definitely a standout point for Cordell in particular, plus the part where all of us were jamming together on the stage of the Capitol Theatre!
The single comes off your upcoming EP Three – what’s the story behind this title?
We’ve always had bad luck with drummers, whether they’ve been unavailable, disinterested, flaky, etc. and we could never seem to lock one down for more than a couple years. The title Three has a couple meanings. Firstly, it’s the third record we’ve ever put out, so that was convenient, but also, the only constant members have been the three of us, so it seemed appropriate to name it after the number three.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process is the one that took the longest. From start to finish, composing the music and writing the lyrics for all of the songs, probably took around four months. Recording, however, only took about two days. We always go into the studio having everything fully prepared and written, so that we don’t have to waste any time when we’re in there. We just go straight to the meat and potatoes of it all, so to speak.
What role does Florida play in your music?
Florida has really big pop-punk and metalcore scenes and seeing as our roots are in pop-punk (and our 2014 EP is a straight up pop-punk record), we got a lot of support from that community. Even now, as we transition away from that and more into a pop and more general alternative sound, we can’t forget where we came from.
Where do you find the inspiration for your songs and lyrics?
Most of the time, they’ll either come from Andre messing around on his guitar, or on his phone, and coming up with a riff, or Cordell singing to himself and ideas just coming to him (usually while singing like an idiot in the shower). We wish we could say something cool and deep, but we’re really not cool guys, so our methods of creating aren’t either, haha.
Any plans to hit the road?
We were planning to maybe do a small tour when the record was released, but in light of recent events, now probably wouldn’t be the best time for that, health wise.
What else is happening next in Saved By Friday’s world?
We’ll be coming out with the record, obviously, but we’re also going to be coming out with merchandise for the first time. People will be able to get their hands on some Saved by Friday shirts, if they stop by a show some time in the future. Also, we featured on a rap album that may come out some time in the next year or so. Also also, Cordell got to make an appearance in an upcoming Alowiza music video, so be on the lookout for that in the future as well! Also also ALSO, we’re looking for a drummer, so anyone looking to be in a band like ours and bang some drums, just know our door is open!
