Hi Sophie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been good. Quarantined in my home, making sure I take good care of myself, and checking in on friends and family.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “From Me”?
“From Me” is my first single. It’s dreamy, groovy, and a bit jazzy. It came out on March 6th, 2020.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I asked some of the important women in my life: “What would you tell your younger self?” It was fascinating to hear what they had to say. Their answers inspired this song. I wanted to tell a story from the feminine perspective.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
A music video for this song is in the works, but the release plans have yet to be formalized.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote the song with the help of my former band mates, The Sophistocrats. We played the song live for a few summers while I was finalizing the lyrics. It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Aybars Savat (KAYA Productions) in Vancouver, while on break from our tour last summer.
What role does Ottawa play in your music?
I was born and raised here in Ottawa, but I am new to the music scene. After studying contemporary music in British Columbia, I decided that I wanted to establish myself in my hometown. Since moving back in 2017, I’ve played City Folk’s Marvest Festival as a solo act, and have joined other local artists’ bands.
How your upbringing has influenced your writing?
My parents introduced me to a few instruments. I played violin and piano as a child. My dad definitely played a huge role in exposing me to great music. He bought me some of my first CD’s, like Neil Young’s greatest hits. My mother’s second wave feminism influenced me as a woman. It’s because of the example she set that I feel strong and brave enough to dedicate myself to music.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I am currently working on a lot of new music, and music videos. I will be posting monthly exclusive demos on my Patreon page. My patrons will be involved in the creation of my first EP!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I am currently in the writing process, but you can expect to hear something new in the fall of 2020.
Any plans to hit the road?
I will mostly likely be playing a few shows in the fall, but until then no shows are planned.
What else is happening next in Sophie D’Orleans’ world?
I am working on a series of YouTube cover videos called the Mirror Sessions, and preparing to officially launch my Patreon.
