Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Safe and sound! Thanks for asking. I miss the lads during these strange times, but I’ve had no shortage of ways to fill the time so far.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I’ll Have Another”?
Petey wrote it most of the way before I ever met him. It was actually almost on the last record, but it never felt totally finished and ready. It ended up being the first song we finished as a four piece.
It focuses on giving yourself a chance to love again after losing the love you thought would sustain you forever. There’s a certain loss of innocence to it, but also a self-critique and reflection on mistakes made that you can learn from.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Oh boy, yes. That ain’t my story to tell though. The good news is, you don’t need to know it. I loved playing this song from the moment Peter taught it to us because I can see my younger self in it, passionate and full of errors.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
IN THIS ECONOMY!?**

How was the recording and writing process?
The ingredient list contains the usual suspects and a tried and true recipe:
Take a lyrical first draft, add some winsome open chord picking. Preserve in salt for two years.
Remove from the vault. Add fresh bassist, and Stratocaster, to taste.
Road-test excessively and record when hot.
What role does Toronto play in your music?
None of us are from here originally. Without a city like Toronto, we wouldn’t have all found each other, which is nice for me. Meeting these fellas changed my life. Toronto is our home now and it’s been reflected in the amazing support we’ve received, and even through a lot of our writing on the new record. This city is always changing so rapidly that it forces you to have a mini reckoning with yourself on an annual basis. Good for creatives.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
What if I told you there’s a whole record that sounds kinda like this just WAITING to be heard by people. It’s been finished for a little while. We’ve never had to do PR during something like this though, so we’ll let you know as soon as we know what to do with it.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
2020 is the year of the record. The rest is being taken day by day as we all weather the world together.
Are you approaching this new record any different?
Yes, but only because this is our first record as this four piece and my first record ever. It’s been a long time coming and it feels real wonderful.
What else is happening next in Midnight Vesta’s world?
We’ll be workshopping ways to keep in touch and give people a reason to smile. All this will be done from a safe distance of course. I’m currently trying to choose the most ideal recipe for a Shepherd’s Pie. Leaning towards a simpler approach without any bells or whistles. That’s more our style.
