Hi Asher, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great! Plenty to be excited about!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Walk Away”?
Yes! I’m really excited about Walk Away. It came about in a different way than usual: I had an instrumental that sounded more “alternative”, and I changed the production to be more of a dance track after the vocal was written. Since it was created that way, I think that helped inspire it to be a different sounding song. It took me out of my comfort zone. I also focused on making this a “2020 song”, which to me means something that’s forward thinking and deviates from the musical trends of last year.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I wrote it with my close friend Annelisa (who is the singer). When she showed up for the session, we talked for over an hour about her then recent break-up. She talked about how she didn’t want to see her ex and that she wished he’d just walk away, and I told her that would be a sick song title. It took a little while to nail the chorus down, but once we did the rest came about really quickly. By the time we wrote the pre-chorus, we knew this song was going to be special. It’s one of those songs you write and you know for sure it’s gonna be something great.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We’re actually currently working on making a music video compiled of TikTok videos. It will be a bunch of girls around Annelisa’s age lip-syncing to the song, so that it looks like any one of them could be the singer!
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing with Annelisa is ALWAYS fun. We work super well together and there’s always a lot of laughter and goofing around. And I keep snacks in my studio as well, so that adds to the vibe. We recorded most of the final vocals right after the session, and then went and got tacos. It was a pretty great day.
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?
Definitely. When I write by myself, it’s usually about things that I feel and am going through. When I write with others, I try to help tell their story. Both are super fun for me. When it comes to producing, I generally prefer to work alone.
With the reception from your previous work – do you feel any pressure as you work on a new material or rather the opposite?
I can always see ways I can be improving, so it’s usually a given that I’m gonna try to make every song better. I’m sure it will always be that way. I’m an actual perfectionist.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Hellz yes! New music is only going to be more frequent than ever moving ahead! I’m super excited about what I’m currently working on. And I have a few songs finished in the pipeline as well.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I have a song called Deja Vu that I’ve been sitting on for a while. No release date yet, but I’m working with my team to make a plan. Hopefully soon!
Any plans to hit the road?
I haven’t played any shows yet, and it’s something I’m really pumped about doing. No plans at the moment, but it’s definitely coming up soon.
What else is happening next in Asher Portman’s world?
I started vlogging on my YouTube channel lately and I’m really enjoying that. I’ve also been working on my singing voice so that I can explore the path of singing my own songs. I think that’s gonna become a big thing for my artist project soon!
