There has never been a better time to try your luck with some online gaming, and the many platforms where you can do so are seeing huge increases in visitors and players right now. One of the best things about these online sites is the sheer variety of different games they have on offer. New slots appear on an almost daily basis, but despite that, it is the old casino classics that remain the most popular. Most of us know a card game or two, but you’re not going to be playing snap or solitaire in a casino. So what card games are on offer, and which should you choose?
Blackjack
Let’s not beat about the bush. Blackjack is the most popular game of all, whether you’re playing at a land based or online casino. As well as being the top-rated card game, it even out-ranks casino slots and roulette. It’s a game with simple rules that practically everyone knows, and even if you don’t you can pick them up in five minutes flat. Yet by studying the game and learning basic strategy, you can cut the house edge right down to less than one percent. Many casino regulars say blackjack is the only card game they need.
Three Card Poker
Poker tends to frighten new players, who probably have Hollywood-fueled visions of losing their shirts to some shady card shark. With this simplified version, though, there is nothing to fear, as just like blackjack, it’s a simple case of you versus the dealer. It’s also a great launchpad from which you might graduate to other forms of poker like Caribbean stud or Texas Holdem.
Baccarat
This game featured in Ian Fleming’s novel Casino Royale. It was replaced by poker in the 2005 movie, as it was felt more people would understand the rules, baccarat having gone right out of fashion. Over the past two to three years, however, its popularity has surged. It’s a great game for new players, as there is really no strategy involved. The game also lends itself perfectly to betting progressions, so is much beloved by the math geeks out there!
Casino War
If you ever played the card game war, this casino version should be high on your list. It’s a relative newcomer, but is gradually becoming more common across the different sites. The only real strategic decision you need to make is whether to surrender or go to war in the event of a tie. Given that the house edges are 3.7 percent and 2.8 percent respectively, the advice is simple: Never surrender!
Red Dog
A lesser known game, but another great one for those new to casino gaming as it is super-simple. You are dealt three cards, the middle face down. If you believe the middle card has a value between the first and third, you make a raise bet. If not, you simply play the ante. The payout depends on the spread – the number of possible values between the cards. Statistically, the optimum strategy is only to raise if the spread is seven or more – that’s all you need to remember in order to play like a pro!
