INTERVIEW: Steve Ropes

Hi Steve, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thanks for having me, all great here.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single Restless heart?

I think this is a weird song, is a little experiment between being commercial/mainstream and artistic/niche orientated. My idea was to do something that moves people emotions and even the mix I think is a bit more personal in way.

I tried to put all of this together without not thinking too much about the technical part and just focused on the melody and the lyrics.

Just wanted to see how people react to this.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song was put together in a very particular period of my life, when my insane passion for music was, and still is, making me doing so many sacrifices that every day I ask myself the same question, is it worth it? The answer is alway a big yes, even though sometimes is very frustrating and make you questioning about yourself and your whole life every day. But you know, big dreams are not easy and I try to write music with all my heart and emotions, that is why I think artists and creative people in general have a ‘restless heart’. Because the process behind is very tiring but passion,  if is strong and true, seems never to fade away.I don’t think this song came out of some inspirational moment, I think it’s simply my mood.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No, I don’t have a big audience yet so for me is just pointless to have a video out. I just prefer to invest money on making music, as in studio hours, paying for great vocalist, artworks and all of this stuff.

I think there will be the right time to make a video to promote a song but i think right now is not the case.

How was the recording and writing process?

The only thing that I recorded was the vocal, was actually quite fun! imallryt is incredibly talented and very dedicated. I always try to convey the emotion and the mood that I want the song to follow and carry along and it was great to work with him. My next release is gonna be with him as well.

The writing process for this one was very basic, I started with the piano, playing some chords and then singing random words in my head. Eventually all came out together. The writing was very fast, then the production part took me a little while.

What role does Italy play in your music?

To be honest Italy doesn’t play any role in my music. I “learned” music there, to play guitar and piano but unfortunately there’s no colture of music here. Especially in my home town that is very isolated.

I wrote many many songs when I was in Italy and I was palying with my bands and then when I moved to London I start to learn music production very seriously and now I’m shaping all my old songs and writing a lot new ones. And I think I’m getting close to my sound and the mood that I want to put out there.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have a lot of stuff almost ready, the only problem is to find singers and go in the studio together that always takes a lot of time. I don’t really like to work in remote for vocals recording but sometimes is necessary.

But I think early days of May I’m gonna have my next release out.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Probably around first week of May.

Any plans to hit the road?

Now times are very bad and full of uncertainty but I’m trying to have at least 6-7 songs out by the end of the year and than hopefully if everything goes well having an album next year.

What else is happening next in Steve Ropes’ world?

Nothing much now, trying to improve and write great music and hopefully someone will believe in me.
