Teen Patti: A Popular Poker Rival

Poker may be a popular game. But in recent times, Teen Patti, the Indian variant of the game, has also emerged as a favourite among gamblers. The card game has already amassed over eight million players across the country and will soon penetrate the global casino markets. Indians have been playing Teen Patti for several generations. And although the game bears some resemblance to the three-card variant of Poker, what sets it apart are the rules of the game. Over the years, several variations of the Teen Patti have been played not only in India but also across other Southeast Asian countries.

Teen Patti and Poker

Both Teen Patti and Poker come with a different set of rules. So, they have both similarities as well as differences. But which of the two games has more monetary rewards? Also, how many people know how to play Teen Patti?

Since the game is similar to Poker in many ways, the objective of Teen Patti is also pretty much the same. Each player is dealt three cards and must get the best hand before the others do. However, there are some differences between the two games. For instance, there are no common cards and the game includes the following classes of cards – Three of a kind, Straight Flush, Straight, Flush, Pair and No Pair. Additionally, how players choose the dealers, how they call and raise, and how they place the antes also vary from standard Poker rules.

Availability of the Game

In a country like India, land gambling is prohibited by law, and online gambling is far from regulated. So, the availability of Teen Patti is scarce, especially in the online gambling space. Also, an Indian game like Teen Patti isn’t very popular as the online form of gambling is mostly dominated by foreign players.

But that hasn’t stopped international online casinos from providing Indian games like Teen Patti or cricket betting. However, one should note that the government has put several restrictions on land-based gambling. So, people are increasingly turning towards online casinos owned and operated by people and organisations from other countries. The money spent on these gambling sites goes into foreign accounts, which is a cause for concern.

Market Trends and Forecasts

According to the law, it is illegal to gamble in India. So, if you want to play a game like Teen Patti, you must either play it as a pastime or in such places where you can find people who gamble illegally. However, with the introduction of online gambling, things may change for the better. Market trends and forecasts suggest that the population of India may surpass even that of China by 2027. They also suggest a sharp rise in the economy due to increase in foreign investments. Such a staggering economic growth will give rise to better Internet coverage throughout the country, and help open up a host of opportunities in the online gambling space.

Currently, Poker dominates the gambling arena with the highest annual revenue since the Average Revenue per user is much higher than most other online casino games. And even though people tend to play other games like cricket and rummy more often than Poker, the revenue they generate each year is still much lower than the popular card game.

So, there is much scope for growth when it comes to online gambling in India. But as the economy continues to grow, card games of Indian origin such as Teen Patti will find a prominent place in the markets. In the coming years, there will be an increase in consumers, operators, as well as users in the online gambling space. However, the number of operators shouldn’t exceed the number of players as it tends to bog down the potential for generating revenue.
