INTERVIEW: Hektor Mass

Hi Hektor, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

It’s my pleasure. Lockdown in Barcelona but everything is fine luckily .

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Obliterated”?

“Obliterated” is a pop song with electronic vibes.  I wanted to release something different and I think we definitely achieved this! It’s an easy song to sing along to and also has a very powerful drop. I also think it could work very well in a TV spot or as a soundtrack for a movie.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I helped Charlie on the melody but he was the one who wrote the song.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

At this moment, we can’t record a music video due the circumstances but I always love to be part of my music videos. If it’s not possible in this case I’ll do it on one of my next songs for sure.

How was the recording and writing process?

This track has a good story. Last summer when I was playing a big festival in Spain called Medusa Festival I met Charlie Rogers, who asked me to do a collab. He sent me the idea of Obliterated and I loved it so I traveled to LA to finish the song. It was recorded at the Capital Records building and we had a great time there. We changed some parts of the lyrics there too with my friends Max Hurrell and Evan Michael.

What role does Spain play in your music?

Actually Spain is more focused on Latin music but I always had a lot of support from major radio stations so I’m grateful for that.

What have you learned from your experience working with the likes of The Chainsmokers and Marshmello?

I met Marshemllo a few times and he’s a really good person, he gave me some great production tips. From Marshmello what I value the most is his ability to curate music so effortlessly. And from The Chainsmokers their live shows are amazing. They have always been really friendly as well.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

I love to work with other people and share our ideas. I think you can get a better result when you work with a team. I always try to work with more people to develop the main idea.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Sure. I’m working on a lot of new music. Some new collabs that you should hear very soon!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Hopefully in 1 to 2 months

Any plans to hit the road?

The 2020 summer tour will be busy. Lot of festivals, Ibiza, and a lot of cities. I hope to beat the 45 performances I did last year as well!

What else is happening next in Hektor Mass’ world?

I want to introduce live elements into my performances and offer a different kind of show. That’s something we’re working on and I hope next year we can make it happen.
