Zakk: “Great, great, just trying to stay happy and healthy, the worlds pretty crazy right now! Hope you’re doing great yourself.”
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Attention”?
Zakk: “Attention” has taken us on such an amazing ride the past few months, we have been able to reach a whole new audience and really carve out a sound that we feel represents all of our many, many, musical influences and tastes. We have had so much fun writing and playing this one and we really hope our supporters can feel that whenever they listen!”
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Zakk: “The lyrics didn’t all come to me at once. It actually happened over the course of a couple months. Long story short, I liked someone, and really didn’t know how to approach them about it. It got to the point where I literally thought “I’m losing my mind, trying to get your attention.” It stuck! Very “tongue in cheek” but I love writing like that.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Zakk: “It was amazing, we did it over the course of two days with Aaron Berkshire out in Orlando, FL. We shot all of the band scenes day one, basically got to dance and hang out in a photography studio for hours, which was a lot of fun. Then on day two we met up with a bunch of our friends including Austin Hull, the song’s producer and Hollyn Adams, the lead actress, in order to film the storyline portion of the video. It all came together so quickly, and we were blown away with the way it turned out!”
How was the recording and writing process?
Zakk: “It was unlike any other experience we’ve had before! We really set out to evolve our sound, we wanted pop, but wanted to stay true to the fact that we are a band with organic instruments. Keeping that feel was very important to us. After we had written all of the parts, we knew we had something we were proud of, but needed help bringing it to that next level. Austin stepped in and helped us achieve just that! The pop & rock marriage is so seamless, and that’s all a testament to his genius.”
What role does Tampa play in your music?
Zakk: “Just like any scene it has its pros and cons. Geographically, Florida kind of gets overlooked by the music industry as a whole, but, it has allowed us as bands to build a culture around local music. We love that! Between Tampa, and honestly Orlando, there are SO MANY talented people doing absolutely incredible things.”
How has Halsey and John Bellion influenced your work?
Zakk: “Jon is one of my biggest influences, he is actually the reason I started writing/producing music in the first place. Around 2012, I actually found him on Youtube creating these “behind the scenes” videos showing him building his songs on the computer from scratch. It was absolutely mindblowing! I’ve been a fan of his ever since. Halsey is one of those artists that seem like they blew up out of nowhere, but when you really dig deep down, she was building an empire right in front of our eyes. Her story is something that really proves that if an artist works extremely hard, anything is possible.”
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Zakk: “Yes! It’s coming very, very soon. It’s an absolute banger and we’re extremely eager for it to be out!”
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Zakk: “We do have the title, and we have a general release date but we’re working on the last couple details and then we’re going to set this thing free!”
Any plans to hit the road?
Zakk: “Unfortunately, nothing as of right now. We know at the moment, the safest place for everyone is at home. Hopefully by the end of the summer, we can get back to what we love the most, playing shows for everyone.”
What else is happening next in Nightbreakers’ world?
Zakk: “We are still writing and recording basically everyday, we are also constantly thinking of new and unique ways to get our music heard by more people. We plan to do more live streams, design some cool new merch, we even got a TikTok, so there’s that! haha! Honestly, we are just so excited to continue to have fun, work hard and be creative as much as possible!”
