Can you talk to us more about your latest video”Y.O.U.”?
My latest visual “Y.O.U.” has me super excited. It was inspired by the Netflix show YOU and I am beyond amazed by how great the final product came out. The visual was directed by Fred Leach and shot by: Moy (MOY THE BOY).
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Honestly, the song was inspired after I binged watch the first season of the show, YOU . I was so captured by how the story was told and how they made this crazy character so likable it really struck a chord in me. When I went to the studio maybe a week or two later I got with my production team and we started coming up with ideas, which is when the color scheme concept was created (“My eyes are green, My mood is blue, you left my messages on read…”). I was listening to a lot of Erykah Badu at the time and I remember seeing her perform “green eyes” on Tiny Desk and I just thought it was one of the greatest yet simple opening lines of a song.
Did you initially get influenced by the TV show prior to writing the song or did it gradually evolve upon watching the show?
I was influenced by the TV show immediately after I watched it. I didn’t quite know at the time it would manifest in a song but I knew it was something I wanted to create with that in mind. When it came time to do the video, my manager and I knew we wanted to do a video inspired by the show, and kind of depicting the same story but we were really afraid of the blowback and backlash it may receive due to the simple fact that I am a black man.
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process was fun and it came to me pretty easily. I worked with my guitarist/ tracking engineer/ producer / best friend Marco to record all the vocals and arrange everything. We recorded the song in his house in Malibu.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
New material is in fact on the way! As far as how’s it coming along, hmmm… It’s coming! This is the first time I have allowed myself to create freely without a major end goal or deadline in mind. This new approach has been very exciting yet it is pretty frightening and uneasy. I can say most of the songs we have thus far I do love, I just don’t know what the finished project will sound like or consist of. This question just stressed me out lol!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
My next project will be titled, California! No release date in mind but a couple of singles will be dropping throughout this year.
Any plans to hit the road?
I am always looking to hit the road and later this year I will be on tour again. Performing night after night, bringing these songs to life and seeing the world is truly the greatest part of being a musician. I’m 100% independent and self-funded, so going on tour is exciting yet daunting as I know the financial responsibility will be in my hands; so, as it stands, I’m trying to find the right opportunity that will allow me to do what I love, reach my fans and potential new ones in a way that makes sense financially.
What else is happening next in Reggie Becton’s world?
Right now my world is dedicated to just building my brand and spreading my music.
