INTERVIEW: Motive Black

Can you talk to us about your latest single “Broken” – Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“Broken’ is about learning how to break away from living safely. I think some of us start to condition ourselves to feel numb after life hands us a few obstacles, and that’s no way to exist in my opinion.  A new relationship helped kick-start my desire to feel fully again, but I think it was mostly the realization that as far as I know I only get this one life.  It was a struggle to break down the barriers I had set in place , but ultimately it was the right choice.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video, and where was it shot?  Who directed it?

The video was shot in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles.  The director was Dale ‘Rage’ Resteghini of Raging Nation Films. We fit a LOT of filming into a short time frame with a tight budget….  He was really a magician putting this together!  I think Rage came up with a great visual representation of what I was trying to convey emotionally.

How was the recording and writing process for “Broken” and the other songs from your coming EP?

Each song was unique. “Broken” actually came together the quickest.  We were  taking a break from another song which we were getting a bit stuck on, and were clearly over-working. We were just messing around  and jamming for fun….  Nick (Rowe) came up with a cool riff and the lyrics for “Broken” just poured out!

What was it like to work with your producer Nick Rowe and how did that relationship develop? How much did he get to influence the song “Broken”?

Working with Nick is great – He’s truly a genius!  Each song was really a mutual, collaborative process.

What role does living in LA play in your music?  Would you say your musical perspective changed in any way as you move from NYC to LA?

Moving to LA was sort of musical rebirth for me. I started working with completely different and incredibly talented people!  My roots will always be in New York, but being in Los Angeles has really helped me mature as a musician. I am really proud of the work I’ve done here.

How’s your new EP coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The EP is finished, and I’m excited for people to hear it.  We haven’t set a release date or title for the EP yet – all of our focus is on “Broken” right now as it just came out.  But we will be releasing more new music a bit later this year.   Stay tuned!

What aspect of tragedy will you get to explore on this record?

It is more about working through tragedy in different ways. Some songs deal with anger, some regret, and finding your power again.  It’s not going to be all tragedy, there’s a lot of hope mixed in as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, as soon as we safely can!   We are so ready to get these songs out in front of everyone, once we all get through all this chaos happening in the world right now.    Everyone be well and stay safe!
