– Hello! We have been in quarantine for the past several days. Interesting times for sure.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “How Can You Tell?”?
– “How Can You Tell” comes from a very raw and vulnerable place. It tells a story of how someone you love can identify your deepest feelings and insecurities almost better than you can yourself.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
– There wasn’t one single defying moment that inspired this song. It came from the many years of being together and getting to know every nuance of each other.
How was the recording and writing process?
– With this particular song, Stephen created a really interesting chord progression last year that we both loved. However, at the time, we didn’t know how to bring it to life yet. I wrote a lot of the lyrics separate of the track and when we came back to it, we realized how cohesive they were together. The song then began to write itself.
What would you say you have learned from your experience working and writing for other names in the industry?
– Over the years, we’ve been able to put valuable time into learning how to develop musical ideas to the fullest extent. by working with other artists, its helped us bring the best musicality out in them and has given us the best tools to bring out the best musicality in ourselves.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you’re collaborating with someone else than working on your own?
– Definitely. Working with someone else brings a whole new array of ideas to the table. When writing with another artist, we allow them to be the driving force in sound and overall feeling of the song. When writing a song for ourselves, we usually know right away what’s working and what needs to be re-worked. We write our own stories from our own experiences and don’t finish a song until it feels just right.
How’s your new EP coming along?
– Our EP is finished and we’re so excited to share it with everyone!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
– No tentative release date but we will be releasing the EP this summer. We have a title for it but aren’t giving it away quite yet.
Any plans to hit the road?
– We were supposed to play SXSW as well as several Sofar Sounds shows on the East Coast. However, considering the current state we’re in with the corona virus outbreak, it’s looking like that won’t be until later this year.
What else is happening next in YVR’s world?
– We are releasing new singles soon, followed by lyrics videos/music videos and some remixes. And we are always writing new songs.
