INTERVIEW: Rising pop star and songwriter Beren Olivia

Hi Beren, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thank you, I’m so excited to be doing this interview! I’m honestly doing great. I’ve been doing everything that I love, writing and singing, so I can’t complain!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Black Magic”?

Black Magic was a song I wrote on my first trip to LA. It was a super casual session with some friends that are also some of the most talented people I know (Scott Robinson, Steve Tippeconnic and Brooke Williams). They have a cool little home studio set up so we were literally just chilling in the living room.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I watched a documentary on Nina Simone. Lyrically, she inspired me so much. The song ‘I put a spell on you’ sparked the initial concept. The idea that a girl has cast a spell on a guy to make him fall in love with her. Kind of like a Siren.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

On my YouTube channel (Beren Olivia) there is a live acoustic version of Black Magic that I filmed at my favourite London Studio, Octagon.

How was the recording and writing process?

The first time I listened to the rough demo of Black Magic, I was driving along the coast back down from Malibu with my mum. I knew straight away I wanted to release it at some point. I had a smile on my face the whole time. I was back in London by the time I decided Black Magic was going to be my debut single. So I booked a day in at Octagon and re cut the vocals, sent the files back to LA, and Scott and Steve finished the track off!

What role does LA play in your music?

LA plays a huge role in my music career so far. Before I had even set foot in a studio, I was just sending home recordings on Instagram of me singing and playing my songs on guitar to producers that I admired. One producer, Scott Robinson, (Grammy nominated producer – credits include Demi Lovato, Bebe Rexha, Christina Aguilera, Sabrina Carpenter) replied to me super quickly and we just spoke on Face Time for 2 hours about music and the industry in general. I flew out to LA two weeks later on a 10 day writing and recording trip with Scott. He introduced me to so many amazing and talented people. That was the trip I wrote Black Magic.

How has Halsey and Post Malone influenced your writing?

Halsey is one of my biggest idols. I just saw her live at the 02 arena in London for the first time and I was so captivated. I couldn’t even sing/dance I was just staring at her in total awe. I love her music and her lyrics. She writes from a place of such truth and honesty and that comes across when she performs. You can feel the passion through her voice when she sings and that is everything I aspire to be as an artist. Post Malone has the same impact on me. So you can imagine how I reacted when they released the duet with Future on the Hollywood’s Bleeding album!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

You can expect lots of new material this year!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I have my second single Falling Up coming out this Friday, 13th March which I’m super excited for! It’s a fun, upbeat song that is about falling in love. It’s a feel good song.

Any plans to hit the road?

I recently supported the band New Rules at their sold out show at the O2 Academy Islington.

What else is happening next in Beren Olivia’s world?

There’s lots of exciting things coming up in the future that I
