INTERVIEW: Chynna Lewis

Hi Chynna, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey friends! I’ve been doing pretty good! The world is crazy right now, but I feel that us artists are familiar with living close to the bone, so we’re all just doing our best with continuing normalcy however we can. Makes you extra grateful for the presence of art and literature in these times.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Mind and Soul”?

It’s my debut single! I released it in February and it’s about a friend that I fell in love with in my mid-twenties. I think dating can be so hard in this day and age, with the illusion of choice that exists through apps and people playing games. It makes you afraid of expressing your honest feelings in a clear way. “Mind and Soul” explores the playfulness and excitement of a definite attraction between two people, but there are also deeper feelings beneath the surface.

I hope listeners can connect with the sexy vibe of the music as well as the earnestness of wanting love.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It is about a friend who I started to havefeelings for. We were “in the grey” and I didn’t know where he stood with the relationship, so I was afraid to tell him that I wanted more than just a casual fling. Finally I got the courage to call him and tell him how I felt. I was afraid of getting hurt, but taking my life into my own hands and asking for what I wanted made me feel really empowered.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Not for this single. But I will be releasing a music video with my upcoming single in the near future.

How was the recording and writing process?

This song came really quickly for me, unlike most songs I’ve written. It was the first one I brought in to my producer, Scott McCannell. We started with developing the song with a live band, and initially it took on a traditional Motown/Soul sound. Then we moved into sampling these instrumental recordings, in the end the song ended up having this combination of modern, beat-centric production with the warmth of old Soul recordings.

What role does Canada play in your music?

I immigrated from Taiwan to Canada when I was ten. My parents always said that I would have never sung a note had I stayed there. In general, Asian cultures tend to view the arts as a hobby as opposed to a respectable career. Moving to Canada was the beginning of it all. There were so many opportunities that nurtured my musicality; all the talent shows, battle of the bands, school plays, music classes, and open mics played a crucial role in leading me to a career in music.

How does your upbringing influence your writing?

Growing up in a musical family, my mother sang, my father taught me guitar, and my brothers and I played music and harmonized together. As a teenager I discovered my love for singing through Soul and R&B music. The sounds of Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin deeply shaped my vocal style. I started writing my own songs on the piano and guitar at the age of fifteen, and this creative instinct eventually led me to being a musician and songwriter.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Hell yeah! Very excited to share all the new music I’ve written. Follow me on Instagram, Spotify, and Facebook for new music releases this year!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

My next single is set to be released in early Summer of 2020.

Any plans to hit the road?

Definitely. Follow me on my socials or website chynnalewis.com for upcoming show announcements.

What else is happening next in Chynna Lewis’ world?

So many exciting things ahead; collaborations, new music videos, live videos, performances, and more. Stay tuned!
