Hi, I’ve been good thanks. With all that’s going on in the world right now, I stop, breath and give thanks for each new day 😊
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Leave Your Mind”?
Yes of course, “Leave Your Mind” is my debut single as a solo artist. It’s a very raw and honest account of my mindset whilst going through the most painful and humbling experience. It expresses the love I’ve been blessed to have, the support in that one special person and the fear I have of pushing them away through my journey of pain and grief.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, actually “Leave Your Mind” was written after the death of my mum. I was in a very dark place for a long time mentally, emotionally and spiritually so this song naturally comes from a place of depression and anxiety. A place of fear.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I am excited to say that there will be a video release, and just like the single itself, its raw and honest. I knew exactly the feeling I wanted to portray. The whole process from notes to filming it was very healing.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process at first was challenging. I already had this track which I loved and would listen to it a lot after my mum passed. Melodies would come to me so easily but the words took a lot longer. After a couple of weeks of just looping the track over and over again I started to open up emotionally and put pen to paper. When I finally finished the song, it was a good few weeks after that I decided to record it properly. By then I could face some of those uncomfortable emotions better.
Would you call this a departure from your previous work?
I would say just another avenue that was meant for me to take. Or rather, all previous avenues lead to this one. The one I was destined to be on.
What role does the UK play in your music?
I came to the UK from my beautiful little island of Jamaica when I was 6 years old. Growing up here I was introduced to different genres of music from all around the world. Naturally I felt the most connection to R&B, Neo-Soul, and 90’s Pop but the UK has given me a love for grime, garage and soulful house.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes you can! I’m once again excited to say, that’s coming along very well. Releasing music as a solo artist this time around I have complete control. From writing to producing my video, I get to be creative in so many ways and it’s so liberating.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The single will be out on March 30th and available to pre-save from March 22nd.
Any plans to hit the road?
No plans to hit the road just yet, but I LOVE performing so when I do, I hope to see you guys there 🙂
