1. Hi David, welcome to VENTS! Did any event in particular inspire you to write your latest single, “Disguise”?
Hey! Thanks for having me. The inspiration for “Disguise” started on the acoustic guitar. I often start the writing process there, no matter what style the song is.
2. What was it like filming the music video?
My buddy Preston Leatherman, a great director/videographer in Nashville, flew out to California and shot the video. We found a rad 1955 Airstream in the desert near Joshua Tree and shot part of it there and in Palm Springs. I lucked out and married a smoking hot wardrobe stylist who made me look sharp for the video.
3. How was the recording and writing process?
I like to write by myself for a while and really make sure it feels like something I would do. When I felt like it was ready to bring in another writer, I asked one of my favorite co-writers, Whitney Coleman. She knew exactly where I was trying to take the song and helped me make it happen. I recorded the song with my then roommate, Lalo Guzeman, a multi-talented producer/writer in Nashville. He brought the song to life with his production and musical ideas along the way. I tend to overthink or obsess over the exact guitar part or vocal, but Lalo was great on capturing the vibe and running with it. We tracked everything in our apartment, and had a great mixing engineer mix it, Jim Cooley.
4. What role does Alaska play in your music?
It all started in Alaska for me. I was born and raised in Anchorage, where majority of my family and long time friends still live. It gave me an adventurous spirit that carried over into everything I do. My buddies and I formed a rock band in 6th grade and grew up playing all over the state. One of my favorite memories was when I was a teenager my dad would take me to sit in at the local blues bars. Alaska is super inspiring to me. Every time I go back, I leave with tons of new ideas for songs and musically recharged.
5 How did your musical perspective change by moving to Nashville?
Moving to Nashville helped me put the focus on songwriting. Even though I was thousands of miles away from home, I was surrounded by like minded and driven musicians that made me want to hone my craft in every aspect.
6. Does the new single mean we can expect additional new music? If so, how’s that coming along?
There’s definitely new music! I have a few new tracks that I’m excited to put out after “Disguise.”
7. Any plans to hit the road?
Totally! These songs are meant to play live, so I’d love to get the show on the road.
8. What else is happening next in David Myhre’s world?
There’s always something going on! Lookout for new music very soon.
