Hollywood style: dressing for the red carpet

Equal parts glamorous and elegant, there’s no style more admired than those shown on the red carpet. Many fashion fans wait months for award season just to admire the wonderful and often quirky styles that many celebrities are known to wear. Think embellished dresses in a variety of cuts, sleek suits and refined accessories, all designed to stand out from the crowd in the best way possible.

Next time you have an event, get red carpet ready and show off your sense of style with some inspiration from Hollywood’s finest. Below we discuss some of the must-dos when dressing up for your next big event – especially if you’re looking to impress with a Hollywood-worthy outfit.

Women

When it comes to dressing like a Hollywood actress, the dress is the most important part.

While red is a classic choice, many celebrities who graced the 2020 Oscars red carpet favoured pink tones. Consider wearing a dress in this colour, from pale blush to dreamy pink champagne hues and take on Hollywood’s current trends. Do you normally choose darker colours? Navy was equally as popular, especially when paired with silver embellishments.

If you’re feeling daring, try to find a dress with a thigh-high split or a low neckline. Exuding confidence and modern glamour, both styles have become incredibly popular choices amongst celebrities. For those who prefer a more demure style, opt for a fit and flare type dress that will show off your figure to an extent you’re comfortable with. Either way, remember the dress code and avoid flashing too much skin, choosing either a low neckline or a split rather than both to maintain a level of formality.

When it comes to footwear, many Hollywood stars match the colour of their dress to a pair of strappy heels. The amount of accessories you wear completely depends on the dress you choose. A more subtle dress can be upgraded with a sparkly belt, earrings and necklace. If you have an ‘out there’ dress, on the other hand, let it grab all of the attention and wear more dainty accessories with it.

Men

While you may presume that men simply turn up in a suit, you would be mistaken; while they don’t come under as much scrutiny as women, they also have to make some extra effort.

As tempting as it may be to chuck on a reliable pair of jeans, red carpet events have a strict black tie dress code – so back away from the denim. While you may not be going to an awards ceremony, a slick suit with slim fit trousers is the best option for any formal event you have coming up. Don’t be afraid to choose a blazer with a more jazzy design – such as a paisley or damask print – to stand out from the crowd while also sticking to the dress code.

Take your look one step further with the addition of a pre-owned Audemars piguet watch. These luxurious watches are eye-catching accessories, and buying them second hand is much more affordable – plus, a lot more sustainable. Sustainability was an important part of this year’s Oscars, with Joaquin Phoenix wearing a suit he has worn to previous events and many others using sustainable materials.

Finish off your Hollywood-ready look with a pair of classic brogues. Alternatively, add a modern twist to the look by opting for leather mules and a silver ring for some extra bling. Either way, don’t forget to add a tie or bowtie to complete the outfit – it is a formal event, after all. If you aren’t a shirt and tie sort of person, swap them out for a dapper black turtleneck.
