Betting strategies for March Madness

March is one of the most popular months of the year in the American sports world. The NCAA Basketball Tournament and the month of madness that ensues makes for an incredible 31 days. It is a time of the year in which a basketball team puts on their Cinderella slippers and anything can happen when the NCAA Tournament tips off. It is also a time in which sports bettors from around the country track and dissect basketball teams and games to the nth degree. Basketball fans will be following all of the hardwood action during March Madness and can use the William Hill promotional offer to wager on the basketball team they believe will win the National Championship.

The NCAA Tournament offers basketball fans the chance to wager on top-notch collegiate sports. If fans want to win profits betting on March Madness, there are a lot of factors that go into picking winners. Here is a look at some methods to March Madness.

Recent performance

It sounds like a no-brainer, but too often bettors focus on a team’s seed in their region rather than on how they played down the stretch. An overall record is the reason for a team’s seed in the bracket. The seed doesn’t always mean a team will do well. Therefore, check out a team’s performance in its conference tournament and the weeks leading up to it. Teams that struggle going into the NCAA Tournament are not often Final Four material.

Motivation and conferences

Tune into any NCAA Tournament show that dissects the teams and brackets and a lot will be made of the mid-major schools. It is best to ignore any talk of mid-major schools and focus on a team’s motivation. Are they a plucky underdog that can upset a top seeded team? It is also best to examine a team’s conference. Over the last decade, Gonzaga is one team that continually gets labeled as a potential tournament winner. They come up short each time. Why? Because the West Coast Conference doesn’t offer the same night in, night out competition as the ACC, Pac-12, or Big 10.

Duke and UNC

There is a trap that a lot of basketball bettors fall into and that is picking Duke and North Carolina to win the tournament each season. Duke and North Carolina are two of the top schools in college basketball but the dynamics of the NCAA Tournament mean these teams won’t always come out on top. The tournament is a single-elimination sprint. One bad game and the top teams can go out. Duke and North Carolina may often go in as top seeds but it doesn’t mean they will outlast everyone else.

Defense has advantages over offense

Good defense beats good offense any day of the week. A team’s defense can shut down a high-scoring offense and in the high-pressure situation of the NCAA Tournament, scoring can become even more difficult. If a team relies too heavily on its offense then it is likely to be upset during the tournament. Teams need a good balance on both ends of the court to go deep into the postseason. A good offensive team can have just one bad shooting game and that results in being knocked out of the tournament.
