INTERVIEW: Tyra Jutai

Hi Tyra, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you! Hi! I have been good.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Nudes”?

Sure, “Nudes” is a dreamy, more electro synthy pop song I wrote and is the second single I’ve put out. The song is about naïveté in relationships, social media, and technology and intimacy intersecting. I wanted to explore our societal-fixation on the superficial… and make a catchy tune.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I was broken up with over the phone after a tumultuous long distance relationship. I wouldn’t say that alone was the inspiration though. For starters, I tend to channel my frustrations from all previous breakups into the current one. My coping mechanism was to just gloss-over the whole thing with humour. I love ditsy-sarcasm, or faux-dumb-blonde-isms… saying overly obnoxious things for a laugh. Some people take my lyrics literally, but they’re pretty tongue-in-cheek most of the time.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’ll be shooting the video in April and releasing it in the summer. There’s definitely a lot of work going into it, and some crazy looks that are going to come out. I’m excited.

How was the recording and writing process?

While going through the breakup, I was cat-sitting one night – hyped up on caffeine, and feeling lonely – and started composing a beat. Then I free-versed over that, and “Nudes” was born.  There were several breaks in between where I danced to Barry White with said cat. Later on, I took it to different engineers and producers to hone the sound and really tighten the mix. I’m so happy with how it turned out.

What role does Toronto play in your music?

I’m still exploring that. Having moved around a lot in my life, I’m trying to find a home I lost – and what home really is – through my musical, and geographic journey. The city inspires me, overwhelms me, underwhelms me, and everything in between. I guess the biggest role the city has played is in helping me develop a network and a team.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, it’s not ever going to stop (I hope). I have an arsenal of material and am constantly writing new stuff. My debut EP project is in the mixing stages but the songs are finished.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m not announcing the release date just yet, but I will be releasing a third single in the coming months.

Any plans to hit the road?

I do shows locally every few months in Toronto, and always post about it on social media. I’m trying to go to the Netherlands for a mini tour for the end of May/early June. Hopefully COVID-19 has calmed by then. I’m really hoping to bring my music to all corners of the earth! So many places I have yet to explore, the Carribean is up there!

What else is happening next in Tyra Jutai’s world?

I’ll be releasing a music video for my first single “Still Good” soon, so look out for that! And a ton of other content on Youtube and Soundcloud separate from my official releases, so you can find me there!
