Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Make You Mine”?
We wrote this song with singer Erin Bowman who used to be in NYC, but now lives in London. We were thinking of writing something in the world of our song “Serious Craving,” but for Erin to sing. In the end, it was so perfect for Ethel, being so throwback girl-group-y, that we decided to record and release it ourselves.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The inspiration behind the song was to capture that uncontrollable desire that we all have felt at some point in our lives and put it into this song. We wanted to write a song that’s universal and speaks to our audience and beyond.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We have a great lyric video coming out any day now.
How was the recording and writing process?
We work out of our studio Creekside Sound in Gowanus, Brooklyn. We started with a basic arrangement of guitar, bass and place-holder drums and wrote the melody and lyrics over that. The three of us co-wrote the melody and lyrics. Mike handled all the production. We eventually got our drummer (also Michael) to come in and track the drums. All live instruments and Ethel sang all of the vocals!
What role does Brooklyn play in your music?
I think Brooklyn supplies the edge to our style. It’s a gritty, somewhat dirty, intense place to live and I think you can hear it in this song; both in the intensity of the emotion and the organic raw approach to the production.
With the major reception your music has been getting in and outside the band – do you feel any pressure while working on this new materials?
I think we feel pretty confident with the band’s sound and direction. Not many bands are doing what we’re doing so I think we have the opportunity to truly stand out.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Absolutely! We have a new song that we’re just finishing up. Should be out in the next six months.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No specifics yet!
Any plans to hit the road?
We are just playing in NY right now. We’re at Rockwood Music Hall on April 9 at 10PM (Stage 1)
