INTERVIEW: Elle Hollis

Hi Elle, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been doing good! Very busy lately with studio days, finishing up songs and writing new ones. I’ve got some releases planned that I’ve been dying for people to listen to so that feels really nice.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Still Mine”?

It’s actually one of the first full songs I ever wrote. I was about thirteen or fourteen and I felt like I had a very clear understanding of love and losing someone. As I got older I realized that I didn’t haha. But I drew a lot of inspiration from movies, books, and people around me and now it actually resonates with my own experiences so that’s cool. My writing skills as a thirteen-year-old are still paying off!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

As I said I drew a lot of inspiration from movies, books and other people’s situations. I specifically remember seeing the movie “Like Crazy” which I think captures a relationship with al its ups and downs perfectly. That in combination with an unrequited crush at the time made me come up with the song.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! I have a video where I’m performing the song. I always think it’s great to have some sort of visual with a song so that it supports the mood and message.

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote it pretty quickly I remember. I just sat behind the piano one night and there it was. I recorded a lot of version over the years, maybe 4 or 5. None of them felt right and I knew that I only wanted to release it when I was satisfied with the recording and when it truly resonates with my understandings of love and losing someone. That time is now.

What role does Holland play in your music?

I was born and raised in the Netherlands and I’m from an area where not a lot of people create music, so I didn’t really have anyone to do that with. I was very very private when it came to my music. So I always wrote by myself which I think was kind of a good thing cause I really explored my own skills and developed my own style that not many other people have. Now that I’m older I’m not afraid to share it and it actually makes me quite proud that I decided to do so.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, I have a bunch of songs ready to be released! I shot a very cool music video in December and January that I just saw the first edits of and it’s gonna be sick. The perfect visual experience for my song!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I do not have a specific date, BUT it will be released in May or June!

Any plans to hit the road?

I have quite some shows lined up for spring and summer! The most excited one is at Pinkpop Festival. The line-up consists of Zara Larsson, Ellie Goulding, Post Malone, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and… me! I went to the festival many times before so to be able to perform there is a dream come true.

What else is happening next in Elle Hollis’ world?

I’m working on those shows a lot, creating the visuals, lighting, and set lists. It’s a lot of work and it can be stressful, but it’s exciting and it will be so worth it. I’m torn between freaking out and thinking there’s not enough time and not wanting to wait to get on stage haha. Either way, I’m super excited about what I’ve been and am still working on. 2020 Will be a good year!
