Buckle up for a midnight ride with Charlotte, North Carolina indie maven Dylan Gilbert and his new single + music video “Moving Forward” — debuting here today at Vents Magazine. A beautifully chaotic underworld filled with dark shadows of avant-garde pop, it brings to mind the best of James Blake, Perfume Genius, and FKA twigs.

About the song, Gilbert comments “Many people in my life, in this generation, seem so despondent and exhausted with the world around them and the system that’s in place. Along with that — our culture is completely consumed and obsessed with nostalgia, myself included. “Moving Forward” is about a radical humility to stand up out of whatever murkiness we’re experiencing and look to the future with some kind of optimism.”

Dylan Gilbert is a songwriter, producer and performer from Charlotte, North Carolina, and a founding member of genre-bending punk band Hectorina. His compositions range from wild guitar-based indie rock to experimental electronic music — taking inspiration from artists such as Kate Bush, Talk Talk, and Prince.

Currently, Gilbert works as an artist in residence at Goodyear Arts, creates with local Charlotte artists of all mediums, and teaches music at the School of Rock Charlotte. In 2020, he will release his 10th solo album, I’ll Be the Lakebed — a 10 song cycle co-produced with Justin Aswell that explores themes of spirituality and technology in 21st century America through avant-garde pop, ambient soundscapes, and DIY performance art.
