INTERVIEW: Canadian Country Artist Lisa Nicole

Hi Lisa, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I have been super well, thank you for asking! I hope everyone is awesome at VENTS too! By the way, thank you so much for taking the time to interview me for my new single “Wait on Me”.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wait On Me”?

I just love this song! I wrote it almost two years ago now, in Nashville with hit songwriter Dave Pahanish (Keith Urban) and long time music partner Jason Thomas who was touring with me. I wanted to write a song that was really true to me, and hit home. About balancing a career on the road such as music, and a relationship back at home. I’ve been with my partner now for 5 years and he’s been so supportive, always and I love him for that. This song is for anyone that works away from home and has that person they can always count on to be there for them when they get back. It takes a big person to wait.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I believe this has been a song I’ve tried to write a few times before, about how grateful I am for my partner at home. When I wrote “Wait on Me”, I remember saying “this is the one!”. When I first sent off the demo, everyone agreed this was my best song yet. Also when I walked into a writing room with Dave Pahanish who wrote “Without You” recorded by Keith Urban how could “Wait on Me” not come to life? Dave, Jason and I are all in the same situation. We all have families at home.

Further to that, part of what brought me back to Nashville was a random moment a few years ago when I sang a duet with Keith Urban at a pop-up concert. It was a big inspirational push to pursue my dreams and it helped coax this song out of me.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

To be honest, it’s a lot of work! Only because I produced the video myself. Just when I think I wear enough hats I put on another one! haha – music video producer. I secured all the locations, the crew, the VW, the tour bus or organized all the shooting days. I enjoy it, though! The only hard part is the day of, I have to take off the producer hat and be the artist! We filmed the video in Vancouver in October so weather could’ve been a huge conflict but Mother Nature blessed us with no rain on either of the 3 shooting days. A big thanks to Traveland RV in Langley for the tour bus, the location at LuLu Island Winery, Stephan who provided the VW, and the two home owners Brandon and Jason. Without the support of the people who believe in me and the song, it would be hard for an independent artist like myself to put out such good content. I’m very proud of how this video turned out and the team behind it!

How was the recording and writing process?

I’ve already touched on the writing process so let’s talk about recording! I was so happy to have Jason Thomas, whom I’ve been playing with for 16 years now to co-write and record the guitar parts on not only Wait on Me, but my whole new album. Also, having Tonnie Stewart sing the background vocals was special. I call her my “band mom” because she has also been with me for about 15 years and a huge mentor in my life. We had Travis Toy from Rascal Flatts record the banjo and steel guitar. All the musicians are the very best.

What was it like to work with Jeff Johnson and how did that relationship develop?

So fun, amazing, hard, but great. We had lots of laughs always, but he really took the time to get me in the zone when recording vocals. I’ve known Jeff in the industry for many years. I was living in Toronto in 2016 for Canada’s Music Incubator when I started sending him song demos. In November, 2018 we finally connected to do some songwriting and in early 2019 we started recording my album.

How much did he get to influence the song?

We really kept a lot from the demo on this song and all the guitar parts Jason had come up with. Not a ton changed musically. Of course, Jeff offered his magical ninja producing talents. He collaborated a lot more on the other songs coming out.

What role does Canada play in your music?

Canada plays a role in who I am as an artist and how I experience life, more than in my songwriting. I’ve been fortunate to travel all over North and South America to experience all sorts of cultures so I can’t say Canada in specific plays a role in my music.

How has your perspective in music changed as you move from Canada to Nashville?

My perspective changed because I was immersed in a culture that the focus was always music. Almost everyone in Nashville plays music or writes songs or is somebody in the music industry. The perspective in Nashville is that, you have to be THE BEST to cut through all the noise. And it’s true. It just made me work harder and that’s what I love about Nashville. I was able to hone in on my singing, writing and performance chops.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

YES YES YES!! I keep talking about these new songs and this new album because yes! I have already written and recorded a whole new album! I AM SO EXCITED! It’s my best work. I wrote most of it in Nashville, but a few songs in Canada. I love every song on the album so much that I’m having a really hard time picking which single to release next!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I spent some time picking out lines in each song that I really loved that could represent the album. One lyric was “Go with the flow where wild hearts beat” and so we’ve decided on “Where Wild Hearts Beat”. Release date is still in the works, but it will likely be later this year! We will be releasing at least another single first! So don’t worry, I won’t keep everyone waiting that long!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! Always, I love being on the road! We’re getting ready to head out across Canada to do a publicity and radio tour to promote Wait On Me. All my tour dates can be found at www.lisanicolemusic.com

What else is happening next in Lisa Nicole’s world?

I must mention my Podcast!! Yes, I started a podcast and it’s called “Wild Hearts”. I’m such a podcast nerd, and when I was thinking of ways to connect with my fans on a deeper, more authentic and real level, I thought.. podcast! Please check it out on Spotify or Apple!
