Baseball Gregg has released its newest full-length album Calendar

In baseball you have designated hitters, closing pitchers, infielders, outfileders and utility players. Heck, you have specialized coaches. In music we often describe genres of music, and while there are many instances of cross-over music, it’s usually the case where a band fits into a certain genre. One band that really does cross over and has music that seems to illicit the same feeling with all its songs is Baseball Gregg.

Baseball Gregg has released its newest full-length album Calendar. The collection features the already-released singles “The Movies (featuring Pecas & William Corduroy) and “Hong Kong Hike”. The core sound, or commonality it seems in Baseball Gregg’s artistic stamp is the idea of light and warmth. The duo, comprised of Samuel Regan & Luca Lovisetto, give their listeners a wide canvass to draw upon, with bright colors to paint stories and assumptions.

With 12-tracks total (including the aforementioned), Calendar is easily one of the strongest albums I’ve seen in 2020 thus far. It has several standouts: “Hong Kong Hike”, “Pleasure and Pain”, “Gratitude (featuring Mediocre Café) and “Slow”. “Movies” is certainly near that pack, as well.

“Hong Kong Hike” just continues to excite with each listen. It gains momentum in a way that every time you drive up a street you see a different house, or every time you visit your favorite park, you find you spot and pick about the clouds above you. Baseball Gregg seems to capture the essence, and the lyrics “I feel like I want to fly” soften any outside doubts and distractions.

“Pleasure and Pain” has this rubbery, bouncing keyboard sound. The electronic pulse just engaged me as a listener instantly. “Every night I lay awake and watch TV until the sunrise, am I alive, I feel dead, looks like once again, I’m stuck in my head” the vocals sing. Compared to “Hong Kong” the vocals are clearer, easier to decipher. This song makes me think of those days when you just feel burned out, and you end up taking a nap later in the day, only to be stuck up all night because you messed up your sleep cycle.

“Gratitude (featuring Mediocre Café) has a killer music bed. It’s like mirrors reflecting off each other; it’s like a lighter, not as scary version of Stranger Things score. Lyrically, the Baseball Gregg songs stay in the same lane, and I preferred the songs that I could understand what they are singing. This is one of those but they seem to have a different vibe than “Pleasure” in terms of vocal delivery.

Finally, “Slow” is my other favorite track. This song puts a spin on the trivial day and while the lyrics feel uncertain, the music bed has this cool juxtaposition. They sing “As long as I have known, the world has moved too slow, for humans to keep up, we’re stuck in a time zone, I just don’t know anymore, 11 years have passed, the world’s moving too fast, and I want to stay still, we’re stuck on a treadmill, I just don’t know anymore.” That idea that we want the world to slow around is so humanizing.
