Singing with more grit than harmony, country rocker Hannah Anders unleashes a rockin’ hit with her single “While I Still Got Time”. This roar of a song can’t contain the equally charged electric guitar and wickedly-matched Anders vocals. Save your one phone call for “While I Still Got Time” – this misfit of a song is too hard to handle. “While I Still Got Time” is a song that has a lot of elbow grease to it and Anders gives the song a helluva swing and lots of chutzpah.
The infectious chorus is the key to this song’s success. “Say my prayers before it fade’s to black, going to shake off the dust, put up a fight, while I still got time, got my ticket on this one-way ride…I’ve been through the valley and come out the other side” Anders sings. While the companion music video to “While I Still Got Time” suggests the idea of ‘time’ as serving jail time or being locked up, while listening to the song, the words could take on different meaning. connected to the idea that Anders is singing about giving your best each day. It could also serve as ‘pump up song’ – remember Jock Jams?- and get listeners who fancy themselves athletes as to ‘put up that fight’ and do everything they can to win. She repeats the chorus a few times and it’s quite alright that she does – it will definitely get stuck in your head.
One other theory on the lyrics might be that she’s talking about an illness or past relationship that nearly devasted her. The idea that she’d been through hell and back is inferred with the with the blitzkrieg of guitar riffs. Her voice and the lead guitar is a perfect marriage. At first it’s a bit of a Bon Jovi-anthem-like song and the more I listened, the more I felt like Anders is a more growly-Carrie Underwood (especially in the song “Before He Cheats”). She feeds off the guitar, just as the guitar has this crazy synergy with her voice. And just when you think the guitar is going to run off and do an extended solo, Anders’ voice seems to pull back the reigns, containing the explosion of sound. The image of her in handcuffs in the music video made me think more about the way her voice steadies the guitar and music bed. Percussion wise, the song is steady and has this audacious groove that could easily pass for country rock. The drum arrangement isn’t as thunderous as an ACDC song, but it’s equally rhythmic.
Fans of Heart, Bon Jovi, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson and Jason Aldean will dig “While I Still Got Time”. The music video is pretty fun, and it definitely showcases her vocal prowess. In her Facebook description, Anders describes herself as ‘country’s sweetheart rocker” and I had to take a second look at the word ‘sweetheart’ through the lens of this song. I didn’t make that connection – she’s more of a badass than sweetheart in this track.
