INTERVIEW: Town Meeting

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey hey! We’re doing pretty alright thanks! Hope y’all are too!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “A Goddam Song”?

Sure thing! “Babe man” aka Brendan, the youngest Condon brother, came up with the idea and brought it to the rest of us, and from there it was a collaborative effort, as most of our songs tend to be.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The original idea started as another commentary on how we (individuals/all humans) perceive “God” or ultimate reality or the great mystery of existence in general and the duality we so often seem to get trapped in when contemplating such things.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

No plans for a video as of yet, but we’re always open to it if the opportunity presents itself!

The single comes off your new album Make Things Better – what’s the story behind the title?

“Make Things Better” was taken from one of the songs off the album that Luke (the eldest Condon brother) wrote called “the fourth verse” and we all agreed that that particular lyric summed up perfectly what we felt was the overall theme of the album and to be honest the theme of where we were and are as individuals and as a band. Meaning we have all had some tough trials up to this point, as all living beings do and will, but that there’s hopefully almost always hope that things can and will get better, and that we can make different choices to be aware of suffering in ourselves and in others, and the steps, be they small or large or in between, that we can take to start “making things better”.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process of the album happened over about a year, a particularly strange and trying year for us all in various ways, as was referenced in the previous question. It was mostly just each of us bringing song ideas to the proverbial table and collectively “making them better” together (see what I did there? =) and the recording process was wonderful! we can’t speak highly enough about Dan Cardinal, Owner of Dimension Sound Studios in Jamaica Plain MA and engineer/producer of this album, who took our already “made better” ideas and then… you guessed it, made them even better.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work?

I’m not sure if departure is the best word, it might apply in some ways, since the sound has certainly changed. But I like to use the word “Evolved”.

What role does Boston play in your music?

We are all from New England and so I think we definitely have a “New England vibe” at times, but I’m sure that means many different things to many different people. I think where you’re from is always going to sneak into your art in some form. I will say that the other artists and fans we’ve made because we are from here has been undeniably incredible and our gratitude and love for all of them is indescribable.

How has The Black Crowes and Neil Young influenced your writing?

I (the middle Condon brother) can’t speak too much to the Black Crowes reference, I know and enjoy their music, just not as well. I can however speak extremely personally to the Neil Young influence since he is my favorite artist of probably all time, there as some close seconds of course but by far Neil is my biggest influence. From his diversity in styles based on where he’s at internally when he’s writing a particular thing to his fearlessness about speaking to the injustices he believes need to be spoken about, throughout history. Neil has a huge influence on all of us and he has become our favorite artist to cover, because his writing is incredible and all over the place and because well he just fucking Rocks ya know?

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The inspiration came from and is everywhere, pardon the cliche but it’s true. From peeing in the snow and being overwhelmed by the beauty and mystery of the moon, to coming to grips with Religious doubt and mortality, it’s all there it’s all happening and it’s all in this album.

Any plans to hit the road?

We have some loose plans in the works for a couple tours but we’re still ironing out the deats as they say. so stay tuned to our social media and website!

What else is happening next in Town Meeting’s world?

What’s next is more shows, more songs and more love!
