INTERVIEW: Alter The Sky

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Weve been great thanks! Working hard as ever to get some new music out to our fans and to put us firmly back on the UK music scene!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Sanctuary”?

The song asks, what is the cost of relinquishing your dreams to remain in your comfort zone, your sanctuary? Will you take the risk, will you see it through, will you accept the consequences and who will you become?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It can be challenging as a musician starting out and you put yourself on the line on stage and in the studio. Pushing the boundaries and stepping out of your comfort zone in order to satisfy your musical appetite and passion is something we go through every day. The love of music keeps this possible and this song is like a reality check, asking what would happen if the sanctuary won.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, there is a music video that will be released mid to end of March so keep your eyes peeled! This will be available to watch on our YouTube channel and social media platforms!

How was the recording and writing process?

Both were really good! The Music was written relatively quickly, we tend to bring ideas to practice and spend a little time with working out the song structure. On this occasion Kev had the majority of the sections written so it was a case of tweaking everything to make it all flow. Hels’s lyrics are always inspired by the vibe of a given track, so once we had the start of the structure she got to writing these and working on the melody.

We recorded the track at Headline Music Studios in Cambridge with Producer Piers Mortimor. We knew Piers would be able to do a decent job of recording us as he had recently worked with Deep Purple on their latest album. In addition to this he had also previously worked with Skunk Anansie so we knew we were in good hands! We had all the amps set up in different live rooms and all played the track in the same room together to give it a more authentic, live feel.

What role does Cambridgeshire play in your music?

As we’re all from in and around Cambridge and spent the majority of our lives growing up in the City, it plays a massive part in the bands career. We have played in pretty much every live music venue and festival that the City has to offer and have a loyal following. We love to play in our hometown because we know a lot of the bands on the local scene so its always great to catch up with them too.

How has Black Stone Cherry and Alter Bridge influenced your writing?

We strive to achieve that Big Riff sound that both bands have. We are all very much into our heavy rock and metal and there’s nothing quite like a decent guitar riff to make a band stand out. Hels is particularly influenced by Myles Kennedy’s power, melody and range in his vocals, and so Alter Bridge have played a huge part in her finding her own vocal sound. We also love the dynamic that each of those bands has, their not just full out rock, they have blues and other cleaner influences which we feel makes them interesting to listen to.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes indeed! The writing process is coming along pretty well, we’ve never been a band that bashes out an entire album within a week of writing and we have been known to take our time when releasing new music. The only reason for this is that we want our music to represent us in the best way possible, to have material that we all love to perform live and to hopefully have tracks that will stand the test of time!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We are aiming to have an album written by the end of 2020, which we think is a realistic goal for us, a tour to support its release will occur in early 2021.No titles in mind just yet, we’d love to get some ideas for album names from our fans!

Any plans to hit the road?

We’ll be touring throughout 2020 in the UK and will release more details of confirmed shows on our socials so please do keep your eyes peeled!

What else is happening next in Alter The Sky’s world?

There’s a lot planned for 2020 but we can’t say too much at this stage. Let’s just say that we’ll be pushing the band onto the next level, focusing on crafting our sound and brand and are looking forward to the journey ahead!  |  |
