PREMIERE: Schaus Stream New LP “Grinding”
Today we are pleased to join forces with the great lads of Schaus who are with their most ambitious record yet by the name of “Grinding.”
About the album, the band comments “This album is the culmination of my dreams, their two dimensional manifestations, and their inevitable collapse. There are two lenses. The first is a local band eyeing success – an autobiographical fantasy – I kill my ideal of success. The second is around 2d ways of viewing love and relationships. Both are entwined in illusions, and broken down throughout the record. Even writing this, I know an editor will read it and judge if my elevator pitch will form a title to drive clicks but that’s what this project is about.
For the love lens, there’s an initial thesis of money and gifts as a way to express love. It’s an unhealthy habit where more emotional depth and empathy is needed. It even dives into self-worth being derived from capital which dries out in Buying a Pool; the money pit of the american dream. It all collapses across the following tracks, making fun of being Happy and the fantastical dreams of the past. I cycle back through romanticism favoring feelings because they feel real in the moment and not letting cliché drive my emotions. I’ve been privileged to even go through this cycle at all and so I come to a new calm acceptance of the tender feeling I can have in the moment.
While all that’s going on, there’s a concurrent narrative on being a musician in a local scene, eyeing a sustainable life within music. This layers back into money as a driver for my art, and this vision of attaining some level of fame to pay the bills. With each twisting turn in clamoring for more, this flat image of what that success means becomes thinner and thinner until I’m back to where I started. Making music because I love the chase and beauty within.
All of this Grinding, only to get back to where I started. Grinding away, working alone, building all these tracks from nothing and into something. The joy of a grind like a skateboard makes as it screeches across a rail. Or the sexuality of a body grinding up against a pole. Or the absurdity of being a child grinding at a school dance. Grinding is all of those things to me, with each contrasting emotion setting a more realistic view. “
