Hi Kerri, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! Great thanks. I’ve just finished a fun week of live shows and songwriting sessions and next week I go to Berlin!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Kissing Fools”?
I’ve been so excited to get this song out there into the world. It’s been a while since i recorded it and even longer since i wrote it. It’s a special part of me and I’m glad to finally be sharing it with the world.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Pretty much the entire decade of the 90’s. I loved high school rom coms growing up and so wished that was my life. I wanted to write a song that paid tribute to all my favourite 90’s movies – Never Been Kissed, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You etc.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
So much fun. I worked on it with one of my best friends Milly Upton and she was a brilliant director. We picked all the kid actors together, dressed up the dance hall and the bedroom scene using things we had at home/in the loft. Everything in Cody’s bedroom was mine as a kid – the Jumanji game, furby, box TV etc.
How was the recording and writing process?
Pretty magic to be honest. I wrote it with my friend Jeff Cohen in the Gibson guitar showroom in LA a couple of years ago. Then i took it to my producer Machine in Austin, Texas. We threw together an incredible band using local musicians and voila Kissing Fools was born!
What was it like to work with Cody Molko and how did that relationship develop?
He’s a brilliant young actor. The video director Milly went to Sylvia Young’s Theatre School as a kid and she had good connections there. We got in touch with them about looking for a great actor for the video and they sent us Cody. We just loved him and he was so much fun to work with on the shoot days. Super pro too.
How much did he get to influence the song?
The song was written and recorded long before the video was made. But he did have some fun ideas on shoot day – like asking me to teach him the chords to Kissing Fools on the guitar. That ended up being one of my favourite parts of the video!
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
It depends really on who I’m working with. I don’t tend to get too stuck on ideas so i’m always open to new suggestions on a collab or when working on my own, i’ll go back and change things at a later date. Open mindedness is definitely the key to successful creation.
How would you say movies actually get to influence your music as a whole?
I wanted to create my own mini movie for the music video so I took elements from some favourite old school Blockbusters, but also from my own experience as a kid so there was some realism in there. I didn’t want the video to be too glossy and Hollywood, because that’s definitely not what i experienced growing up in Glasgow!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Totally! I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff just waiting to burst out. It’s coming… promise!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Title yes – I’ll give you a clue, it’s named after a lyric from one of my recent singles.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ve got a bunch of festivals coming up, an acoustic tour in April and who knows beyond that – new things appear in the diary every day.
What else is happening next in Kerri Watt’s world?
I’m hosting my own new music night at a world famous Scottish distillery called Glengoyne on March 20th. It’s going to feature 4 female songwriters (including myself) plus the audience are treated to 2 delicious drams of whisky! Super excited about that. And non-music related – I’m training for my first marathon!
Hi Jessica, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? Hi! I’ve been good! Can you …
