Gulf coast rock & roller Jack Sledge set to release new EP, Notes of a Drifter

New Orleans based singer/songwriter Jack Sledge is set to release his latest EP, Notes of a Drifter on April 3. Recorded in one session at The Maze in New Orleans by Ross Farbe of Video Age, Notes of a Drifter explores the idea of the American dream, escape, freedom, poverty, and what it all means in the current digital age.

The four song EP leverages the cultural dissonance of Sledge’s childhood, spent in 90’s Brooklyn with Oklahoman parents, to produce a distinctly American sound while dovetailing American mythology of “the dream” and contemporary disquiet. With colorfully narrative lyrics, Sledge shares the stories of Americans seeking escape by bringing mellifluous dexterity to the haggard yowl and yip of desperation. Whether they be a drifter navigating a bewitching Western odyssey, an ex-con facing his murderous past, or urban millennials suffering malaise, Sledge’s characters ultimately ask listeners what constitutes freedom–from place, past, and, very often, self.

Sledge’s distinct Americana rock sound aligns him with contemporaries like The Wild Feathers, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Jamestown Revival, Shovels & Rope, and more who often reflect on the current state of American culture within the context of the ever elusive “American Dream”.

“I wanted to make something unique while drawing on tradition,” Sledge commented about the EP.  “Something to capture the franticness of not having enough money and living a life at odds with yourself and your soul, in order to eat. While not an especially unique story, I wanted to tell that story in a particularly American context by using places that hold meaning in my life: Amarillo, TX,  where my dad is from; 125th street in Harlem, where I used to live; the Gulf Coast, where my wife is from and where I live now.”

Notes of a Drifter will be available across all platforms April 3, 2020. To celebrate, Jack Sledge will be hosting a release party that night at One Eyed Jack’s in New Orleans before he sets off on tour with dates to include Tuscaloosa, Pensacola, Pascagoula, and Nashville.
