Hi Pastel, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS! Thank you for having me J I’ve been great thank you! A good decade is starting and I’m feeling more creative than ever!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Let You”?

I had a show in Taipei, Taiwan and stayed at my friend’s place, Haoting, for 2 weeks. We both met 3 years ago when I was on tour over there and became really good friends. He’s usually also touring with his band (Sunset Rollercoaster) and he luckily had a couple days off during that time.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song talks about a kind of relationship/friendship anyone can go through in their life, where you don’t really know how to describe it. It also highlight a feeling that this person can have while chasing for the dream lover. An innocent Love Story…

How was the recording and writing process?

We probably wrote the main part in a few days and took the rest of the week working and polishing the rest of the song. I remember having to go to the dentist for a very painful tooth ache 3 days before I left and had to record some of the vocals with the worst pain ever… haha

The vibe was really easy and chilled actually – Haoting has his own studio facilities at his house and I think the excitement of being together after all these years made this song special.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! You can watch it right here:

It was a great experience and hope it looks as fun as it as to shoot it.

What was it like to work with Haoting and how did that relationship develop?

It’s amazing, we don’t live in the same country and he’s traveling a lot, it’s hard to catch each other in the same city. When we do, we really focus on having the best time and you can feel it into our song. I think our relationship will stay the same and become stronger after this great experience.

How much did he get to influence the song?

Alot ! We blended our two styles to create a piece of work that did not sound like anything we’ve heard before. Haoting has a good stage experience and is very good at being creative in studio.

Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Yeah, it’s usually super-fast, when I click with someone, the song can be done in a day or two.

I usually make sure to understand what the collaborator’s influences are and what he does musically before starting anything. I love seeing other people’s creative process.

How would you say your particular upbringing and cultural background gets to influence your music as a whole?

I grew up listening a lot of R&B and Funk Music from my older sister and on the other side a lot of Polynesian and 80’s music from my mum. These genres influences me a lot to blend different genres such as sunshine acoustic music mixed with Gospel and Neo Soul.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yep, I’ve got really inspired after producing Let You and worked on a lot of new songs !

I usually get a wave of inspiration and have to create during that moment.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

My next EP will be out just in time for summer. You can expect a few surprises there, including a song with an artist I already worked with 🙂

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m planning to go back on tour in Asia. I’ll probably have shows in new countries/cities I haven’t played before. I’m really excited to play my new songs live!

What else is happening next in Pastel’s world ?

A lot is happening in Pastel’s world haha I’m now focusing on singing more in my songs.

I’ve also been directing/co-directing my next music videos, which is something I’d love to keep doing, it’s a lot of fun!
