Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? We are excited to be a part of it. Thanks so much for having us.
The last month has been very exciting time for us. We got a lot of media attention and enjoyed the success of our new music video & single. We feel blessed.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Astronaut”?
‘Astronaut’ was released on February 14th through Sony Orchard and Volunteer Media. We recorded our new EP at Monarch Studios with our producers and all agreed that ‘Astronaut’ makes the best single for our new EP. It features a nice blend of guitar sounds mixed with synth pop that is both catchy but also has a unique feel to it.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was important for the band to write a song about the current environmental crisis. In 2018 Josias (vocalist) had both of his parents trapped in the BC Wildfires. It was a terrifying time for the community and it was not handled well by authorities. The recent fires in Australia and other natural disasters are a clear indication that there will be more to come and that we have to stop manipulating the truth and act now.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We relased our official music video along with the single. The video for ‘Astronaut’ is based on a concept in which the human race is treating the planet as visitors (or astronauts) while exploiting it rather than preserving it for the generations to come. Political leaders use the environmental crisis to manipulate citizens for their own benefit and imprisoned people in safety zones.
The story follows a father (Georgie Daburas / Netlfix ‘Sabrina’) who mistrusts the government’s intentions and builds oxygen masks for him and his daughter (Karissa Ketter / Netflix ‘Firefly Lane’). When they escape the zones past the guards, they get confronted with an unexpected challenge that ultimately leads to their freedom.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing ‘Astronaut’ felt very organic. It came together in our jam space and everyone contributed their part. Some of the other songs featured on the EP were written in our home studio in North Vancouver. We collaborated with electronic producers Alex Penney for ‘Urge II’ and with Stephen Oka for ‘Shallow Streets II’ to give them both a different feel. The song ‘Sins’ features a strong quartet and a choir while ‘In your head’ is more of a rock song mixed with some synth pop. We love to push boundaries and try new things as it pushes us to grow as musicians. What is important to us is that each song has a theme or a message that we are all passionate about.
What role does Vancouver play in your music?
It has definitely inspired our band name. We all love Vancouver and call it home. There is so much beauty and nature here and it makes it easy to write music.
However, Vancouver is also a city that can be quite tough for people to connect with one another. The band name ‘OurGlassZoo’ was loosely based on an episode in the TV show Black Mirror in which people rate each other on a point system on their phones and everyone strives so hard to be perfect, yet there is very little human interaction. This can lead to social anxiety and depression, which is quite common in Vancouver. The lyrics for ‘Listen’ and ‘Urge’ directly reflect that concept.
In 2017 we collaborated with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and donated over $3000 to one of their programs.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! Our new EP ‘Hindsight’ will be released through Sony Orchard. We are also heading back to the studio this year to record new materials.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The official release date for our EP ‘Hindsight’ is March 20th.
What makes ‘Hindsight’ so special is the mix of genres. There are so many musical influences that include guest musicians & singers. The songs deal with subject matters that are close to our hearts, so we are very excited to get this music out into the world.
Any plans to hit the road?
There is a western Canadian tour planed for fall. Next year we want to do a European or Asian tour. We are still working out the details for that.
What else is happening next in OurGlassZoo’s world?
We are hosting our EP release concert at the Roxy on April 25th and will collaborate with some guest musicians for that.
Our music video release show will take place at the Fox Cabaret on May 23rd and we have some big surprises planed for our fans for that event.
We are scheduled to play Uptown music festival in July as well as some other outdoor shows.
We are looking forward to our tour at the end of summer and will head back to the studio after that.
Besides that we are also working on a few live performance videos that we will be posting on social media. Stay tuned!
