Last year was a good year for the film industry, as evidenced by the lineup at the 2020 Oscars. South Korea’s Parasite surprised us all by picking up four Academy Awards, and becoming the first ever non-English-language film to win best picture. Other notable mentions that kept us entertained throughout the year include The Irishman, Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix and Qunetin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, the past is, well, in the past, with movie enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the offerings of 2020. Here are just some of the not-to-be-missed films slated for release this year.

This is another one of these computer-animated films that may just make you have a good cry. The Pixar Animation Studios film tells the story of two teenage elf brothers who embark on a journey to bring their dead father back to life for 24 hours. At the center of the film is a magic staff, a prearranged gift from the elves’ father, which creates quite a bit of commotion when it only brings back the father’s legs.
A QUIET PLACE PART II
Release date: March 20, 2020
If you haven’t seen the first film yet, stop reading now. A Quiet Place Part I ends with the director/writer John Krasinski’s character dead, leaving his wife Evelyn, played by Emily Blunt, in charge of protecting the children from sound-sensitive monsters. “A Quiet Place Part II picks up where the first movie left off, with John Krasinski’s behind the camera, and immortalized in one of the film’s flashback sequences used to explain why the world went silent,” says film expert from
TheGoodEstate.com Ava Kirk. “Considering that the first film grossed a massive $340 million worldwide last year, this sequel is slated to do very well at the box office.”
NO TIME TO DIE
Release date: April 8, 2020
Originally scheduled for release in November 2019, No Time to Die will see Daniel Craig return one last time as the legendary James Bond. No Time to Die is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the man behind Season 1 of True Detective. Significantly, the film’s script has been co-written by the creator and star of Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, so you are guaranteed plenty of laughs. But what about the storyline, you ask? And rightly so. No Time to Die will see James Bond hot on the heels of a dangerous villain armed with potentially-deadly new technology.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
Release date: June 26, 2020
Love it or hate it, there is no stopping this sequel to the 1986 hit film Top Gun, arguably a movie that put Tom Cruise on the Hollywood map. After over 30 years in service, the sunglassed navy pilot, Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, finds himself training Top Gun graduates, including Rooster, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose, played by Miles Teller, for a very special mission. This time around Tom Cruise’s love interest is played by Jennifer Connelly, and even Val Kilmer makes a cameo as lieutenant Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky.

A new Marvel comic book adaptation, Eternals tells the story of immortal superhumans who take it upon themselves to protect humanity from the evil Deviants. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the film features a solid cast that is sure to impress, including Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harington. The story, which takes in 7,000 years, or the time the eternals have inhabited the earth, features the first ever deaf Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero named Makkari.

Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune doesn’t have a very good track record when it comes to being adapted to the screen. In the 1070s, the outside-the-box director Alejandro Jodorowsky tried to produce a 14-hour cinematic take on the novel before running out of money, and in 1984, David Lynch’s version of the story bombed at the box office. Let’s hope that it is a third time lucky for director Denis Villeneuve. This adaptation of the book is slated to star Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides who leads the battle to control the planet Arrakis, as well as Marvel star Zendaya as Chani and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.
